English → Spanish Full Text Level 8/10

Oedipus denounces the crime of which he is unaware, and undertakes to track out the criminal.

Step by step it is brought home to him that he is the man.

The closing scene reveals Jocasta slain by her own hand and Oedipus blinded by his own act and praying for death or exile.

OEDIPUS THE KING

EDIPO REY

Suppliants of all ages are seated round the altar at the palace doors, at their head a PRIEST OF ZEUS.

To them enter OEDIPUS.

Ante ellos entra EDIPO.

My children, latest born to Cadmus old,

Why sit ye here as suppliants, in your hands

Branches of olive filleted with wool?

What means this reek of incense everywhere,

And everywhere laments and litanies?

y por doquier lamentos y letanías?

Children, it were not meet that I should learn

Hijos, no sería propio que yo me enterara

From others, and am hither come, myself,

I Oedipus, your world-renowned king.

yo Edipo, vuestro rey de universal renombre.

Ho! aged sire, whose venerable locks

¡Eh! Anciano venerable, cuyas canas

Proclaim thee spokesman of this company,

te proclaman portavoz de esta asamblea,

Explain your mood and purport.

explica tu ánimo y propósito.

Is it dread Of ill that moves you or a boon ye crave?

¿Os mueve el temor a algún mal o reclamáis algún favor?

My zeal in your behalf ye cannot doubt;

No podéis dudar de mi celo en vuestro favor;

Ruthless indeed were I and obdurate

Verdaderamente cruel e insensible sería yo

If such petitioners as you I spurned.

si rechazara a suplicantes como vosotros.

PRIEST.

SACERDOTE.
