Thus pondering one clue of hope I caught,

Assim ponderando, uma pista de esperança captei,

And tracked it up; I have sent Menoeceus' son,

E a segui; enviei o filho de Meneceu,

Creon, my consort's brother, to inquire

Creonte, irmão de minha esposa, para consultar

Of Pythian Phoebus at his Delphic shrine,

How I might save the State by act or word.

And now I reckon up the tale of days

E agora conto os dias

Since he set forth, and marvel how he fares.

'Tis strange, this endless tarrying, passing strange.

É estranho, esta demora sem fim, estranhíssimo.

But when he comes, then I were base indeed,

If I perform not all the god declares.

PRIEST.

SACERDOTE.

Thy words are well timed; even as thou speakest

Tuas palavras são oportunas; enquanto falas

That shouting tells me Creon is at hand.

OEDIPUS.

ÉDIPO.

O King Apollo! may his joyous looks

Ó rei Apolo! que seu semblante alegre

Be presage of the joyous news he brings!

Seja presságio das alegres notícias que traz!

PRIEST.

SACERDOTE.

As I surmise, 'tis welcome; else his head

Had scarce been crowned with berry-laden bays.

Dificilmente estaria coroada de louros carregados de frutos.

OEDIPUS.

ÉDIPO.

We soon shall know; he's now in earshot range.

[Enter CREON]

[Entra CREONTE]

My royal cousin, say, Menoeceus' child,

Meu nobre primo, dize, filho de Meneceu,

What message hast thou brought us from the god?

Que mensagem nos trouxeste do deus?

CREON.

CREONTE.

Good news, for e'en intolerable ills,

Boas notícias, pois mesmo males intoleráveis,

Finding right issue, tend to naught but good.

Encontrando a saída certa, tendem apenas ao bem.

OEDIPUS.

ÉDIPO.

How runs the oracle? thus far thy words

Give me no ground for confidence or fear.

CREON.

CREONTE.

If thou wouldst hear my message publicly,

Se quiseres ouvir minha mensagem publicamente,

I'll tell thee straight, or with thee pass within.

Digo-te diretamente, ou entramos juntos.

OEDIPUS.

ÉDIPO.

Speak before all; the burden that I bear

Is more for these my subjects than myself.

CREON.

CREONTE.

Let me report then all the god declared.

Deixa-me então relatar tudo o que o deus declarou.
