That is my husband who, by secret cruelty

Never to be told, robbed me of my youth and my beauty;

Nunca por contar, me robó mi juventud y mi belleza;

Till at last, wrinkled and with yellow teeth,

And with broken pride and shameful humility,

I sank into the grave.

Me hundí en la tumba.

But what think you gnaws at my husband's heart?

The face of what I was, the face of what he made me!

¡El rostro de lo que fui, el rostro de lo que él me hizo!

These are driving him to the place where I lie.

In death, therefore, I am avenged.

En la muerte, por tanto, estoy vengada.

Fletcher McGee

Fletcher McGee

She took my strength by minutes,

Ella me arrebató la fuerza minuto a minuto,

She took my life by hours,

Ella me arrebató la vida hora a hora,

She drained me like a fevered moon

Ella me agotó como una luna febril

That saps the spinning world.

Que consume al mundo girante.

The days went by like shadows,

Los días pasaban como sombras,

The minutes wheeled like stars.

Los minutos giraban como estrellas.

She took the pity from my heart,

Ella arrancó la piedad de mi corazón,

And made it into smiles.

Y la convirtió en sonrisas.

She was a hunk of sculptor's clay,

My secret thoughts were fingers:

Mis pensamientos secretos eran dedos:

They flew behind her pensive brow

Volaron detrás de su pensativa frente

And lined it deep with pain.

Y la surcaron profundamente de dolor.

They set the lips, and sagged the cheeks,

Fijaron los labios, y hundieron las mejillas,

And drooped the eye with sorrow.

Y abatieron los ojos con tristeza.

My soul had entered in the clay,

Mi alma había penetrado en la arcilla,

Fighting like seven devils.

Luchando como siete demonios.

It was not mine, it was not hers;

No era mía, no era de ella;

She held it, but its struggles

Ella la sostenía, pero sus luchas

Modeled a face she hated,

Modelaron un rostro que ella odiaba,

And a face I feared to see.

Y un rostro que yo temía ver.

I beat the windows, shook the bolts.

Golpeé las ventanas, sacudí los cerrojos.

I hid me in a corner

Me escondí en un rincón

And then she died and haunted me,

Y entonces ella murió y me persiguió,

And hunted me for life.

Y me acechó de por vida.
