That is my husband who, by secret cruelty

Never to be told, robbed me of my youth and my beauty;

Nunca a ser contada, roubou-me a juventude e a beleza;

Till at last, wrinkled and with yellow teeth,

And with broken pride and shameful humility,

E com o orgulho quebrado e humildade vergonhosa,

I sank into the grave.

Afundei-me na sepultura.

But what think you gnaws at my husband's heart?

The face of what I was, the face of what he made me!

O rosto do que eu era, o rosto do que ele fez de mim!

These are driving him to the place where I lie.

In death, therefore, I am avenged.

Na morte, portanto, estou vingada.

Fletcher McGee

She took my strength by minutes,

Ela tomou minha força minuto a minuto,

She took my life by hours,

Ela tomou minha vida hora a hora,

She drained me like a fevered moon

Ela me esgotou como uma lua febril

That saps the spinning world.

Que suga o mundo em rotação.

The days went by like shadows,

Os dias passaram como sombras,

The minutes wheeled like stars.

Os minutos giravam como estrelas.

She took the pity from my heart,

Ela tirou a piedade do meu coração,

And made it into smiles.

E a transformou em sorrisos.

She was a hunk of sculptor's clay,

My secret thoughts were fingers:

Meus pensamentos secretos eram dedos:

They flew behind her pensive brow

And lined it deep with pain.

E a sulcaram profundamente com dor.

They set the lips, and sagged the cheeks,

Eles moldaram os lábios e afundaram as bochechas,

And drooped the eye with sorrow.

E curvaram os olhos com tristeza.

My soul had entered in the clay,

Minha alma havia entrado na argila,

Fighting like seven devils.

Lutando como sete demônios.

It was not mine, it was not hers;

Não era minha, não era dela;

She held it, but its struggles

Ela a segurou, mas suas lutas

Modeled a face she hated,

Modelaram um rosto que ela odiava,

And a face I feared to see.

E um rosto que eu temia ver.

I beat the windows, shook the bolts.

Eu bati nas janelas, sacudi os ferrolhos.

I hid me in a corner

Eu me escondi em um canto

And then she died and haunted me,

E então ela morreu e me assombrou,

And hunted me for life.

E me perseguiu pela vida.
