English → Pt Full Text Level 4/10

You saw me only as a run-down man

Você me via apenas como um homem acabado

With matted hair and beard

Com cabelo e barba emaranhados

And ragged clothes.

E roupas esfarrapadas.

Sometimes a man's life turns into a cancer

From being bruised and continually bruised,

De tanto ser machucado e continuamente machucado,

And swells into a purplish mass

E incha até formar uma massa arroxeada

Like growths on stalks of corn.

Como excrescências nos talos do milho.

Here was I, a carpenter, mired in a bog of life

Into which I walked, thinking it was a meadow,

With a slattern for a wife, and poor Minerva, my daughter,

Whom you tormented and drove to death.

A quem você atormentou e levou à morte.

So I crept, crept, like a snail through the days

Of my life.

Da minha vida.

No more you hear my footsteps in the morning,

Não ouvirás mais meus passos pela manhã,

Resounding on the hollow sidewalk

Ressoando na calçada oca

Going to the grocery store for a little corn meal

And a nickel's worth of bacon.

E um tostão de bacon.

"Butch" Weldy

"Butch" Weldy

After I got religion and steadied down

They gave me a job in the canning works,

And every morning I had to fill

E toda manhã eu tinha de encher

The tank in the yard with gasoline,

O tanque no pátio com gasolina,

That fed the blow-fires in the sheds

Que alimentava os maçaricos nos galpões

To heat the soldering irons.

Para aquecer os ferros de soldar.

And I mounted a rickety ladder to do it,

Carrying buckets full of the stuff.

Carregando baldes cheios do líquido.

One morning, as I stood there pouring,

Numa manhã, enquanto eu estava lá despejando,

The air grew still and seemed to heave,

O ar ficou parado e pareceu se agitar,

And I shot up as the tank exploded,

And down I came with both legs broken,

E caí com as duas pernas quebradas,

And my eyes burned crisp as a couple of eggs.

For someone left a blow—fire going,

Pois alguém deixou um maçarico aceso,

And something sucked the flame in the tank.

E algo sugou a chama para dentro do tanque.
