English → De CHAPTER I Level 5/10

I could lick you with one hand tied behind me, if I wanted to."

"Well why don't you _do_ it? You _say_ you can do it."

"Warum tust du es dann nicht? Du _sagst_, du kannst es tun."

"Well I _will_, if you fool with me."

"Nun, ich _werde_ es tun, wenn du mich zum Narren hältst."

"Oh yes—I've seen whole families in the same fix."

"Oh ja – ich habe ganze Familien in derselben Lage gesehen."

"Smarty! You think you're _some_, now, _don't_ you? Oh, what a hat!"

"Schlaukopf! Du glaubst, du bist _etwas Besonderes_, jetzt, _nicht wahr_? Oh, was für ein Hut!"

"You can lump that hat if you don't like it. I dare you to knock it off—and anybody that'll take a dare will suck eggs."

"Du kannst dir den Hut gefallen lassen, wenn er dir nicht passt. Ich fordere dich heraus, ihn herunterzuschlagen – und wer eine Herausforderung annimmt, ist ein Feigling."

"You're a liar!"

"Du bist ein Lügner!"

"You're another."

"Du auch."

"You're a fighting liar and dasn't take it up."

"Du bist ein streitlustiger Lügner und traust dich nicht, es anzunehmen."

"Aw—take a walk!"

"Ach – verschwinde!"

"Say—if you give me much more of your sass I'll take and bounce a rock off'n your head."

"Sag mal – wenn du mir noch mehr von deiner Frechheit gibst, werde ich dir einen Stein an den Kopf werfen."

"Oh, of _course_ you will."

"Oh, _natürlich_ wirst du das."

"Well I _will_."

"Nun, ich _werde_ es tun."

"Well why don't you _do_ it then? What do you keep _saying_ you will for? Why don't you _do_ it? It's because you're afraid."

"Warum tust du es dann nicht? Warum _sagst_ du immer, du wirst es tun? Warum _tust_ du es nicht? Es liegt daran, dass du Angst hast."

"I _ain't_ afraid."

"Ich habe _keine_ Angst."

"You are."

"Doch, hast du."

"I ain't."

"Habe ich nicht."

"You are."

"Doch, hast du."

Another pause, and more eying and sidling around each other.

Presently they were shoulder to shoulder.

Bald standen sie Schulter an Schulter.

Tom said:

Tom sagte:

"Get away from here!"

"Geh weg von hier!"

"Go away yourself!"

"Geh du selbst weg!"

"I won't."

"Ich werde nicht."

"I won't either."

"Ich auch nicht."

So they stood, each with a foot placed at an angle as a brace, and both shoving with might and main, and glowering at each other with hate.

But neither could get an advantage.
