The Angel in the House — Page 4

English → De Book I. Level 7/10

I will not hearken blame or praise;

Ich werde weder Tadel noch Lob hören;

For so should I dishonour do

Denn so würde ich Unehre erweisen

To that sweet Power by which these Lays

Jener süßen Macht, durch die diese Lieder

Alone are lovely, good, and true;

Allein lieblich, gut und wahr sind;

Nor credence to the world's cries give,

Which ever preach and still prevent

Das stets predigt und dennoch verhindert

Pure passion's high prerogative

Das hohe Vorrecht reiner Leidenschaft,

To make, not follow, precedent.

Präzedenz zu schaffen, nicht zu folgen.

From love's abysmal ether rare

Aus des Liebessäthers abgründigem Seltenäther

If I to men have here made known

New truths, they, like new stars, were there

Neue Wahrheiten, sie waren, gleich neuen Sternen, dort

Before, though not yet written down.

Schon vorher, wenngleich noch nicht niedergeschrieben.

Moving but as the feelings move,

I run, or loiter with delight,

Laufe ich, oder verweile ich mit Freude,

Or pause to mark where gentle Love

Persuades the soul from height to height.

Die Seele von Höhe zu Höhe überredet.

Yet, know ye, though my words are gay

Doch wisset, obwohl meine Worte fröhlich sind

As David's dance, which Michal scorn'd.

Wie Davids Tanz, den Michal verachtete.

If kindly you receive the Lay,

Wenn ihr das Lied gütig empfangt,

You shall be sweetly help'd and warn'd.

THE CATHEDRAL CLOSE.

DER DOMPLATZ.

1

Once more I came to Sarum Close,

Noch einmal kam ich nach Sarum Close,

With joy half memory, half desire,

Mit einer Freude, halb Erinnerung, halb Sehnsucht,

And breathed the sunny wind that rose

Und atmete den sonnigen Wind, der aufstieg

And blew the shadows o'er the Spire,

Und die Schatten über den Kirchturm trieb,

And toss'd the lilac's scented plumes,

Und die duftenden Rispen des Flieders schüttelte,

And sway'd the chestnut's thousand cones,

Und die tausend Zapfen der Kastanie bewegte,

And fill'd my nostrils with perfumes,

Und meine Nüstern mit Düften erfüllte,

And shaped the clouds in waifs and zones,

And wafted down the serious strain

Und den ernsten Klang herübertrug

Of Sarum bells, when, true to time,

Der Glocken von Sarum, als ich, pünktlich,

I reach'd the Dean's, with heart and brain

Beim Haus des Dekans ankam, mit Herz und Sinn,

That trembled to the trembling chime.

Die dem zitternden Glockenspiel zitterten.

'Twas half my home, six years ago.

The six years had not alter'd it:

Die sechs Jahre hatten es nicht verändert:

Red-brick and ashlar, long and low,

Roter Backstein und Quaderstein, lang und niedrig,

With dormers and with oriels lit.

Mit Dachgauben und erleuchteten Erkerfenstern.
