THE PROLOGUE.

EL PRÓLOGO.

'MINE is no horse with wings, to gain

'El mío no es caballo con alas, para alcanzar

The region of the spheral chime;

La región del repique celestial;

He does but drag a rumbling wain,

Solo arrastra un carro traqueteante,

Cheer'd by the coupled bells of rhyme;

Animado por las campanas emparejadas de la rima;

And if at Fame's bewitching note

My homely Pegasus pricks an ear,

Mi humilde Pegaso agudiza el oído,

The world's cart-collar hugs his throat,

And he's too wise to prance or rear.'

Thus ever answer'd Vaughan his Wife,

Así respondía siempre Vaughan a su esposa,

Who, more than he, desired his fame;

Quien, más que él, deseaba su fama;

But, in his heart, his thoughts were rife

Pero, en su corazón, sus pensamientos bullían

How for her sake to earn a name.

Sobre cómo, por ella, ganarse un nombre.

With bays poetic three times crown'd,

Coronado tres veces con laureles poéticos,

And other college honours won,

Y ganados otros honores universitarios,

He, if he chose, might be renown'd,

Él, si lo elegía, podría alcanzar renombre,

He had but little doubt, she none;

Él tenía pocas dudas, ella ninguna;

And in a loftier phrase he talk'd

Y en un lenguaje más elevado habló

With her, upon their Wedding-Day,

Con ella, en su día de bodas,

(The eighth), while through the fields they walk'd,

(El octavo), mientras paseaban por los campos,

Their children shouting by the way.

'Not careless of the gift of song,

'No indiferente al don del canto,

Nor out of love with noble fame,

I, meditating much and long

Yo, meditando mucho y largamente

What I should sing, how win a name,

Considering well what theme unsung,

Considerando bien qué tema no cantado,

What reason worth the cost of rhyme,

Remains to loose the poet's tongue

Queda para soltar la lengua del poeta

In these last days, the dregs of time,

Learn that to me, though born so late,

Aprende que a mí, aunque nacido tan tarde,

There does, beyond desert, befall

Me acontece, más allá de lo merecido,

(May my great fortune make me great!)

(¡Que mi gran fortuna me haga grande!)

The first of themes, sung last of all.

In green and undiscover'd ground,

En terreno verde y no descubierto,

Yet near where many others sing,

Pero cerca de donde cantan muchos otros,

I have the very well-head found

He encontrado el mismísimo manantial

Whence gushes the Pierian Spring.

De donde brota la Fuente Pieria.
