The Angel in the House — Page 4

English → It Book I. Level 7/10

I will not hearken blame or praise;

Non ascolterò biasimo né lode;

For so should I dishonour do

Poiché così disonorerei

To that sweet Power by which these Lays

Quel dolce Potere per cui questi Canti

Alone are lovely, good, and true;

Sono soli amabili, buoni e veri;

Nor credence to the world's cries give,

Né darò credito alle grida del mondo,

Which ever preach and still prevent

Che sempre predicano e tuttavia impediscono

Pure passion's high prerogative

L'alta prerogativa della pura passione

To make, not follow, precedent.

Di creare, non seguire, il precedente.

From love's abysmal ether rare

Dall'etere abissale e raro dell'amore

If I to men have here made known

Se io agli uomini ho qui rivelato

New truths, they, like new stars, were there

Nuove verità, esse, come nuove stelle, erano là

Before, though not yet written down.

Prima, benché non ancora scritte.

Moving but as the feelings move,

Muovendomi solo come si muovono i sentimenti,

I run, or loiter with delight,

Corro, o mi attardo con diletto,

Or pause to mark where gentle Love

O mi fermo a notare dove il gentile Amore

Persuades the soul from height to height.

Persuade l'anima di vetta in vetta.

Yet, know ye, though my words are gay

Eppure, sappiate, sebbene le mie parole siano gaie

As David's dance, which Michal scorn'd.

Come la danza di Davide, che Mical disprezzò.

If kindly you receive the Lay,

Se accoglierete con benevolenza il Canto,

You shall be sweetly help'd and warn'd.

Sarete dolcemente aiutati e ammoniti.

THE CATHEDRAL CLOSE.

IL RECINTO DELLA CATTEDRALE.

Once more I came to Sarum Close,

Ancora una volta giunsi al Recinto di Sarum,

With joy half memory, half desire,

Con una gioia metà ricordo, metà desiderio,

And breathed the sunny wind that rose

E respirai il vento soleggiato che si levava

And blew the shadows o'er the Spire,

E soffiava le ombre sul Campanile,

And toss'd the lilac's scented plumes,

E agitava i profumati pennacchi del lillà,

And sway'd the chestnut's thousand cones,

E dondolava i mille coni del castagno,

And fill'd my nostrils with perfumes,

E riempiva le mie narici di profumi,

And shaped the clouds in waifs and zones,

E plasmava le nuvole in brandelli e fasce,

And wafted down the serious strain

E portava giù il solenne suono

Of Sarum bells, when, true to time,

Delle campane di Sarum, quando, fedele all'ora,

I reach'd the Dean's, with heart and brain

Giunsi alla casa del Decano, con cuore e mente

That trembled to the trembling chime.

Che tremavano al tremulo rintocco.

'Twas half my home, six years ago.

Era in parte la mia casa, sei anni fa.

The six years had not alter'd it:

I sei anni non l'avevano mutata:

Red-brick and ashlar, long and low,

Mattoni rossi e pietra da taglio, lunga e bassa,

With dormers and with oriels lit.

Con abbaini e con finestre ad oriel illuminate.
