THE PROLOGUE.

O PRÓLOGO.

'MINE is no horse with wings, to gain

'O meu não é cavalo com asas, para alcançar

The region of the spheral chime;

A região do carrilhão esférico;

He does but drag a rumbling wain,

Ele apenas arrasta um barulhento carro,

Cheer'd by the coupled bells of rhyme;

Animado pelos sinos acoplados da rima;

And if at Fame's bewitching note

E se à nota sedutora da Fama

My homely Pegasus pricks an ear,

O meu singelo Pégaso ergue uma orelha,

The world's cart-collar hugs his throat,

A coleira do carro do mundo aperta-lhe a garganta,

And he's too wise to prance or rear.'

E ele é sábio demais para cabriolar ou encabritar-se.'

Thus ever answer'd Vaughan his Wife,

Assim sempre respondia Vaughan à sua Esposa,

Who, more than he, desired his fame;

Que, mais do que ele, desejava a sua fama;

But, in his heart, his thoughts were rife

Mas, em seu coração, seus pensamentos abundavam

How for her sake to earn a name.

Sobre como, por ela, conquistar um nome.

With bays poetic three times crown'd,

Com louros poéticos três vezes coroado,

And other college honours won,

E outras honras universitárias conquistadas,

He, if he chose, might be renown'd,

Ele, se o desejasse, poderia ser famoso,

He had but little doubt, she none;

Ele tinha pouca dúvida, ela nenhuma;

And in a loftier phrase he talk'd

E em linguagem mais elevada ele falou

With her, upon their Wedding-Day,

Com ela, no seu Dia do Casamento,

(The eighth), while through the fields they walk'd,

(O oitavo), enquanto pelos campos caminhavam,

Their children shouting by the way.

Seus filhos gritando pelo caminho.

'Not careless of the gift of song,

'Não descuidado do dom do canto,

Nor out of love with noble fame,

Nem desapaixonado pela nobre fama,

I, meditating much and long

Eu, meditando muito e longamente

What I should sing, how win a name,

Sobre o que deveria cantar, como conquistar um nome,

Considering well what theme unsung,

Considerando bem que tema não cantado,

What reason worth the cost of rhyme,

Que razão vale o custo da rima,

Remains to loose the poet's tongue

Resta para soltar a língua do poeta

In these last days, the dregs of time,

Nestes últimos dias, a borra do tempo,

Learn that to me, though born so late,

Fica sabendo que a mim, embora nascido tão tarde,

There does, beyond desert, befall

Cabe, além do merecido,

(May my great fortune make me great!)

(Que a minha grande fortuna me torne grande!)

The first of themes, sung last of all.

O primeiro dos temas, cantado por último de todos.

In green and undiscover'd ground,

Em terra verde e não descoberta,

Yet near where many others sing,

Mas perto de onde muitos outros cantam,

I have the very well-head found

Encontrei a própria nascente

Whence gushes the Pierian Spring.

De onde jorra a Fonte Piéria.
