The divine comedy — Page 1

English → De CANTO II Level 9/10

Now was the day departing, and the air,

Imbrown'd with shadows, from their toils releas'd

Von Schatten gebräunt, von ihrer Mühe befreit

All animals on earth; and I alone

Alle Geschöpfe auf Erden; und ich allein

Prepar'd myself the conflict to sustain,

Bereitete mich, den Kampf zu bestehen,

Both of sad pity, and that perilous road,

Which my unerring memory shall retrace.

Den mein unfehlbares Gedächtnis wieder durchschreiten soll.

O Muses! O high genius! now vouchsafe

O Musen! O hoher Geist! gewähret nun

Your aid! O mind! that all I saw hast kept

Eure Hilfe! O Geist! der du alles, was ich sah, bewahrt hast

Safe in a written record, here thy worth

And eminent endowments come to proof.

Und deine hohen Gaben kommen zur Bewährung.

I thus began: "Bard! thou who art my guide,

Consider well, if virtue be in me

Bedenke wohl, ob Kraft genug in mir ist,

Sufficient, ere to this high enterprise

Hinreichend, bevor du mich diesem hohen Unternehmen

Thou trust me. Thou hast told that Silvius' sire,

Anvertraust. Du hast erzählt, dass des Silvius Vater,

Yet cloth'd in corruptible flesh, among

Noch im vergänglichen Fleisch gekleidet, unter

Th' immortal tribes had entrance, and was there

Den unsterblichen Scharen Einlass fand und dort

Sensible present. Yet if heaven's great Lord,

Leibhaftig zugegen war. Doch wenn des Himmels großer Herr,

Almighty foe to ill, such favour shew'd,

In contemplation of the high effect,

In Betrachtung der hohen Wirkung,

Both what and who from him should issue forth,

Was und wer aus ihm hervorgehen sollte,

It seems in reason's judgment well deserv'd:

So scheint es im Urteil der Vernunft wohl verdient:

Sith he of Rome, and of Rome's empire wide,

In heaven's empyreal height was chosen sire:

In des Himmels empyreischer Höhe zum Stammvater erkoren ward:

Both which, if truth be spoken, were ordain'd

And 'stablish'd for the holy place, where sits

Who to great Peter's sacred chair succeeds.

He from this journey, in thy song renown'd,

Learn'd things, that to his victory gave rise

Dinge, die zu seinem Sieg Anlass gaben

And to the papal robe. In after-times

Und zum päpstlichen Gewand. In späteren Zeiten

The chosen vessel also travel'd there,

Reiste auch das auserwählte Gefäß dorthin,

To bring us back assurance in that faith,

Um uns Gewissheit in jenem Glauben zurückzubringen,

Which is the entrance to salvation's way.

But I, why should I there presume? or who

Permits it?

Erlaubt es?
