The divine comedy — Page 3

English → Spanish CANTO II Level 9/10

Now much I dread lest he past help have stray'd,

And I be ris'n too late for his relief,

From what in heaven of him I heard. Speed now,

Date prisa ahora,

And by thy eloquent persuasive tongue,

Y con tu lengua elocuente y persuasiva,

And by all means for his deliverance meet,

Assist him. So to me will comfort spring.

Asístele. Así nacerá para mí el consuelo.

I who now bid thee on this errand forth

Yo, quien ahora te envía a este encargo,

Am Beatrice; from a place I come.

Soy Beatrice; vengo de un lugar.

(Note: Beatrice. I use this word, as it is pronounced in the Italian, as consisting of four syllables, of which the third is a long one.) Revisited with joy. Love brought me thence,

(Nota: Beatrice.

Who prompts my speech. When in my Master's sight

Quien impulsa mis palabras. Cuando ante la vista de mi Señor

I stand, thy praise to him I oft will tell."

She then was silent, and I thus began:

Ella entonces calló, y yo así comencé:

"O Lady! by whose influence alone,

"¡Oh Dama! por cuya influencia solamente,

Mankind excels whatever is contain'd

La humanidad supera cuanto se halla contenido

Within that heaven which hath the smallest orb,

So thy command delights me, that to obey,

Tu mandato me deleita tanto, que obedecer,

If it were done already, would seem late.

Si ya estuviera hecho, parecería tardío.

No need hast thou farther to speak thy will;

No tienes necesidad de expresar más tu voluntad;

Yet tell the reason, why thou art not loth

To leave that ample space, where to return

Thou burnest, for this centre here beneath."

She then: "Since thou so deeply wouldst inquire,

Ella entonces: "Puesto que tan profundamente deseas saber,

I will instruct thee briefly, why no dread

Te instruiré brevemente por qué ningún temor

Hinders my entrance here. Those things alone

Obstaculiza mi entrada aquí. Solo aquellas cosas

Are to be fear'd, whence evil may proceed,

None else, for none are terrible beside.

Ninguna otra, pues ninguna más es terrible.

I am so fram'd by God, thanks to his grace!
