Now much I dread lest he past help have stray'd,

今、私は彼が助けの届かぬところへ迷い込んでしまったのではないかと深く恐れています、

And I be ris'n too late for his relief,

そして私が彼を救うには遅すぎて立ち上がったのではないかと。

From what in heaven of him I heard. Speed now,

天において彼について聞いたことからそう思うのです。今すぐ急いでください、

And by thy eloquent persuasive tongue,

そなたの雄弁で説得力ある言葉によって、

And by all means for his deliverance meet,

そして彼の救済にふさわしいあらゆる手段をもって、

Assist him. So to me will comfort spring.

彼を助けなさい。そうすれば私に慰めが湧き起こるでしょう。

I who now bid thee on this errand forth

今そなたにこの使命を命じる私は

Am Beatrice; from a place I come.

ベアトリーチェである。私はある場所から来た。

(Note: Beatrice. I use this word, as it is pronounced in the Italian, as consisting of four syllables, of which the third is a long one.) Revisited with joy. Love brought me thence,

(注:ベアトリーチェ。この語はイタリア語の発音に従い、四音節からなり、第三音節が長音とされる。)喜びとともに再び訪れた場所から。愛が私をそこから導いてきた、

Who prompts my speech. When in my Master's sight

愛が私の言葉を促すのだ。我が主の御前に

I stand, thy praise to him I oft will tell."

私が立つとき、そなたの誉れを彼にしばしば伝えるでしょう。」

She then was silent, and I thus began:

彼女はそれから沈黙し、私はこのように語り始めた。

"O Lady! by whose influence alone,

「おお、貴女よ!その御力のみによって、

Mankind excels whatever is contain'd

人類は含まれるあらゆるものを超え出るのです

Within that heaven which hath the smallest orb,

最も小さな天球を持つあの天の内に。

So thy command delights me, that to obey,

貴女の命令は私をこれほど喜ばせます、従うことが、

If it were done already, would seem late.

もう果たされていたとしても、遅かったと思われるほどに。

No need hast thou farther to speak thy will;

貴女はもはやそのお望みをお語りになる必要はございません。

Yet tell the reason, why thou art not loth

されど教えてください、なぜ貴女はいとわないのかを

To leave that ample space, where to return

あの広大な場所を離れることを、そこへ戻ることを

Thou burnest, for this centre here beneath."

貴女は熱望しているのに、この下にある中心へと。」

She then: "Since thou so deeply wouldst inquire,

彼女はそれから言った。「そなたがそれほど深く問い求めるならば、

I will instruct thee briefly, why no dread

私はそなたに手短に教えましょう、なぜ何の恐れも

Hinders my entrance here. Those things alone

ここへの私の入りを妨げないかを。ただそれらのものだけが

Are to be fear'd, whence evil may proceed,

恐れられるべきものです、そこから悪が生じるものだけが、

None else, for none are terrible beside.

他には何もない、他には恐ろしいものは何もないのだから。

I am so fram'd by God, thanks to his grace!
