Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd:

正義こそが我が構造の創設者を動かせり：

To rear me was the task of power divine,

我を築くは神聖なる力の業にして、

Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.

至高の知恵、そして原初の愛の業なり。

Before me things create were none, save things

我より以前には被造のものは何もなく、ただ

Eternal, and eternal I endure.

永遠なるものあるのみ、そして我もまた永遠に存続する。

"All hope abandon ye who enter here."

「ここに入る者よ、一切の希望を捨てよ。」

このような文字を、薄暗い色にて我は認めたり、

Over a portal's lofty arch inscrib'd:

門の高きアーチの上に刻まれたるを：

Whereat I thus: "Master, these words import

"Here thou must all distrust behind thee leave;

Here sighs with lamentations and loud moans

我でさえ入る時に泣いたほどなり。様々な言葉、

Horrible languages, outcries of woe,

恐ろしき言語、悲嘆の叫び声、

Accents of anger, voices deep and hoarse,

怒りの口調、深くしわがれた声、

With hands together smote that swell'd the sounds,

打ち合わされた手がその音を膨れ上がらせ、

Made up a tumult, that for ever whirls

騒乱を作り出し、それは永遠に旋回し続ける、

Round through that air with solid darkness stain'd,

濃厚な闇に染まりたる大気の中を回りながら、

Like to the sand that in the whirlwind flies.

旋風の中を飛ぶ砂のごとくに。

I then, with error yet encompass'd, cried:

我はその時、なおも惑いに包まれながら、叫べり：

"O master! What is this I hear? What race

「おお、師よ！これは我が聞くは何ぞ？いかなる種族が

Are these, who seem so overcome with woe?

これほどまでに悲嘆に打ちひしがれているように見えるのか？」
