The divine comedy — Page 1

English → Pt CANTO II Level 9/10

Now was the day departing, and the air,

Ora o dia se despedia, e o ar,

Imbrown'd with shadows, from their toils releas'd

Escurecido pelas sombras, das suas fadigas libertava

All animals on earth; and I alone

Prepar'd myself the conflict to sustain,

Me preparei para sustentar o conflito,

Both of sad pity, and that perilous road,

Which my unerring memory shall retrace.

O Muses! O high genius! now vouchsafe

Ó Musas! Ó alto gênio! agora dignem-se

Your aid! O mind! that all I saw hast kept

Conceder vossa ajuda! Ó mente! que tudo o que vi guardaste

Safe in a written record, here thy worth

A salvo num registro escrito, aqui o teu valor

And eminent endowments come to proof.

E eminentes dons vêm à prova.

I thus began: "Bard! thou who art my guide,

Consider well, if virtue be in me

Considera bem, se há em mim virtude

Sufficient, ere to this high enterprise

Suficiente, antes que a esta alta empresa

Thou trust me. Thou hast told that Silvius' sire,

Me confies. Tu disseste que o pai de Silvio,

Yet cloth'd in corruptible flesh, among

Ainda revestido de carne corruptível, entre

Th' immortal tribes had entrance, and was there

As tribos imortais teve entrada, e esteve lá

Sensible present. Yet if heaven's great Lord,

Sensivelmente presente. Mas se o grande Senhor dos céus,

Almighty foe to ill, such favour shew'd,

Poderoso inimigo do mal, tal favor concedeu,

In contemplation of the high effect,

Em contemplação do alto efeito,

Both what and who from him should issue forth,

It seems in reason's judgment well deserv'd:

Parece, no juízo da razão, bem merecido:

Sith he of Rome, and of Rome's empire wide,

Pois ele de Roma, e do vasto império de Roma,

In heaven's empyreal height was chosen sire:

Nas alturas do empíreo celeste foi escolhido como pai:

Both which, if truth be spoken, were ordain'd

And 'stablish'd for the holy place, where sits

Who to great Peter's sacred chair succeeds.

Quem sucede à sagrada cadeira do grande Pedro.

He from this journey, in thy song renown'd,

Ele desta viagem, em teu canto celebrada,

Learn'd things, that to his victory gave rise

And to the papal robe. In after-times

E ao manto papal. Em tempos posteriores

The chosen vessel also travel'd there,

O vaso eleito também viajou até lá,

To bring us back assurance in that faith,

Which is the entrance to salvation's way.

But I, why should I there presume? or who

Permits it?

O permite?
