The divine comedy — Page 3
Now much I dread lest he past help have stray'd,
And I be ris'n too late for his relief,
From what in heaven of him I heard. Speed now,
Pelo que dele ouvi no céu. Apressa-te agora,
And by thy eloquent persuasive tongue,
E com tua eloquente e persuasiva língua,
And by all means for his deliverance meet,
Assist him. So to me will comfort spring.
Assiste-o. Assim nascerá em mim o consolo.
I who now bid thee on this errand forth
Eu, que agora te envio nesta missão,
Am Beatrice; from a place I come.
Sou Beatrice; venho de um lugar.
(Note: Beatrice. I use this word, as it is pronounced in the Italian, as consisting of four syllables, of which the third is a long one.) Revisited with joy. Love brought me thence,
(Nota: Beatrice. O Amor me trouxe daqui,
Who prompts my speech. When in my Master's sight
Que inspira minhas palavras. Quando diante de meu Mestre
I stand, thy praise to him I oft will tell."
Eu estiver, teus louvores a ele frequentemente contarei."
She then was silent, and I thus began:
Ela então ficou em silêncio, e eu assim comecei:
"O Lady! by whose influence alone,
"Ó Senhora! por cuja influência apenas,
Mankind excels whatever is contain'd
A humanidade supera tudo quanto está contido
Within that heaven which hath the smallest orb,
Naquele céu que possui o menor orbe,
So thy command delights me, that to obey,
Tanto me deleita teu comando, que obedecer,
If it were done already, would seem late.
Se já fosse feito, pareceria tardio.
No need hast thou farther to speak thy will;
Não precisas falar mais sobre tua vontade;
Yet tell the reason, why thou art not loth
To leave that ample space, where to return
Deixar aquele amplo espaço, ao qual regressar
Thou burnest, for this centre here beneath."
She then: "Since thou so deeply wouldst inquire,
Ela então: "Já que tão profundamente desejas indagar,
I will instruct thee briefly, why no dread
Instruir-te-ei brevemente sobre por que nenhum temor
Hinders my entrance here. Those things alone
Impede minha entrada aqui. Apenas aquelas coisas
Are to be fear'd, whence evil may proceed,
None else, for none are terrible beside.
Nenhuma outra, pois nenhuma outra é terrível além dessas.
I am so fram'd by God, thanks to his grace!
