The divine comedy — Page 4

English → Pt CANTO III Level 9/10

thyself torment not: so 't is will'd,

não te atormentes: assim está determinado,

Where will and power are one: ask thou no more."

Straightway in silence fell the shaggy cheeks

Logo em silêncio caíram as faces peludas

Of him the boatman o'er the livid lake,

Do barqueiro sobre o lago lívido,

Around whose eyes glar'd wheeling flames. Meanwhile

Those spirits, faint and naked, color chang'd,

Aquelas almas, débeis e nuas, mudaram de cor,

And gnash'd their teeth, soon as the cruel words

They heard. God and their parents they blasphem'd,

Ouviram. A Deus e a seus pais blasfemaram,

The human kind, the place, the time, and seed

A raça humana, o lugar, o tempo e a semente

That did engender them and give them birth.

Then all together sorely wailing drew

Então todos juntos, lamentando amargamente, se dirigiram

To the curs'd strand, that every man must pass

Who fears not God. Charon, demoniac form,

Que não teme a Deus. Caronte, forma demoníaca,

With eyes of burning coal, collects them all,

Beck'ning, and each, that lingers, with his oar

Strikes. As fall off the light autumnal leaves,

Golpeia. Como caem as leves folhas outonais,

One still another following, till the bough

Strews all its honours on the earth beneath;

Espalha todas as suas glórias pela terra abaixo;

E'en in like manner Adam's evil brood

Assim também a malvada progênie de Adão

Cast themselves one by one down from the shore,

Lançou-se um a um desde a margem,

Each at a beck, as falcon at his call.

Thus go they over through the umber'd wave,

Assim atravessam pela onda sombria,

And ever they on the opposing bank

E sempre na margem oposta

Be landed, on this side another throng

Desembarcam, e deste lado outra multidão

Still gathers. "Son," thus spake the courteous guide,

Ainda se reúne. "Filho," assim falou o cortês guia,

"Those, who die subject to the wrath of God,

"Aqueles que morrem sujeitos à ira de Deus,

All here together come from every clime,

And to o'erpass the river are not loth:

E não relutam em cruzar o rio:

For so heaven's justice goads them on, that fear

Is turn'd into desire. Hence ne'er hath past

Se transforma em desejo. Por isso jamais passou

Good spirit.

Uma boa alma.
