EINLEITUNG ZU „DER SCHARLACHROTE BUCHSTABE".

It is a little remarkable, that—though disinclined to talk overmuch of myself and my affairs at the fireside, and to my personal friends—an autobiographical impulse should twice in my life have taken possession of me, in addressing the public.

Es ist ein wenig bemerkenswert, dass—obwohl ich wenig geneigt bin, am Kamin und gegenüber meinen persönlichen Freunden allzu viel von mir selbst und meinen Angelegenheiten zu reden—ein autobiografischer Drang mich in meinem Leben zweimal ergriffen hat, wenn ich mich an die Öffentlichkeit wandte.
