Chapter One: A Talented Young Lady Composes a Poem in Her Father's Place
A poem says: The Six Classics find their source within the human heart; look carefully and you will find that even laughter and insult are literature.
Heaven and earth are a stage; do not look down upon it, and you must look with deep eyes at the debates of past and present.
The odes of Zheng and Wei were preserved not without purpose, and the chaotic entries in the Spring and Autumn Annals are surely not mere licentiousness.
And furthermore, Zi Yun, a thousand years on, gave thanks through life and death to those who truly knew him.
The story goes that during the Zhengtong reign period, there was a man who had passed the imperial examinations and served as the Director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices; his surname was Bai, his given name was Xuan, his courtesy name was Taixuan, and he was a native of Jinling.
When Wang Zhen monopolized power, he hung up his official hat and returned home.
This Grand Provisioner Bai had no elder brother above him and no younger brother below; he had only one sister, who had married a Deputy Commissioner Lu in Shandong and gone far away, so he lived alone in isolation.
By nature he was calm and had few desires; he did not covet fame or profit, was reluctant to flatter others, and simply took pleasure in poetry and wine.
Disliking the clamorous social engagements of the city, he eventually settled in the countryside.
About sixty or seventy li from the city was a village called Jinshi Village.
This village was surrounded on all sides by green mountains, a clear stream wound its way from west to east in meandering curves, and on both banks peach and plum blossoms bloomed in abundance, giving the place considerable scenic charm.
Although this village had over a thousand households, if one were to name the wealthiest and most distinguished family, it would be that of Grand Provisioner Bai.
This Grand Provisioner Bai held a high office, his family was wealthy, and his learning and political reputation were greatly celebrated, but his only regret was that he had passed the age of forty without an heir.
He had taken several concubines, but strangely, even after keeping them by his side for three or five years, there was not the slightest sign of a child.
When those concubines left and married elsewhere, each of them gave birth to a child within a year.
Master Bai sighed and accepted it as fate, and never again took a concubine.
His wife, Madam Wu, prayed to gods and Buddhas in every direction, burning incense and making vows.
It was not until she was forty-four that she finally gave birth to a daughter.
On the day she was born, Master Bai dreamed that a divine being presented him with a piece of beautiful jade, its color red as the sun, and so he gave the child the milk name Hongyu.
Master Bai and his wife had gone so long without a child that, even though it was a daughter, they were overjoyed.
This Hongyu was of extraordinary beauty, with brows like spring willows and eyes like autumn waves; moreover she was clever by nature, and by the time she was eight or nine she had learned needlework and sewing, excelling at everything she tried.
Unfortunately, when she was eleven, her mother Madam Wu passed away first, and after that she followed Master Bai every day in reading and writing.
Truly the gathered essence of mountains and rivers was bestowed upon her, and the yin and yang of heaven and earth did not fail; she possessed both remarkable beauty and outstanding intelligence, so that by the time she was fourteen or fifteen she could read books and compose essays, and had become a genuine female scholar.
Because Master Bai had devoted himself to poetry and wine and recited verse every day, Miss Hongyu was especially gifted in the area of poetry and song lyrics.
When they were at leisure at home, Master Bai would compose a poem and then have Hongyu compose a matching rhyme, and when Hongyu composed a poem they would polish it together.
Having gained such a daughter, Master Bai no longer worried about a son; he simply hoped to select an accomplished and good-looking husband for her, but for the time being no suitable candidate appeared, and so she remained unmarried until she was sixteen.
Then the Tumu Crisis occurred at court; the Zhengtong Emperor was taken north into captivity, the Jingtai Emperor ascended the throne, Wang Zhen was executed, and the court officials were recalled to service.
Master Bai's name was on the list of former officials, and after a meeting the Board of Personnel still recommended him as Director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices; the appointment order arrived in Jinling before long.
Master Bai had no wish to serve in office, but since Hongyu's marriage had not yet been arranged, he thought to himself: 'I want to select a fine husband, but the talent in this one county is limited — how could it compare to the capital, which is the gathering place of scholars from all under heaven? Surely there must be outstanding young men of talent there. Why not take this opportunity to go? If fate permits and I find a good husband, I can rely on him as a son-in-law.'
Having made up his mind, he did not decline the appointment; he chose an auspicious day and took Miss Hongyu with him to the capital to take up his post.
On arriving at the capital, he paid his respects at court, took up his post, and found a private residence to live in.
The Court of Imperial Sacrifices was a quiet and undemanding government office; moreover, although Master Bai was loyal and righteous, he was a man of casual temperament who disliked dealing with affairs.
Even when there was a great matter of state and the Nine Ministers held a conference, the two main offices and the relevant board took charge; the Director of Sacrifices was merely a nominal position required only to nod in agreement, so there was nothing that greatly taxed his energy.
Every day when official business was done, he did nothing but drink wine and compose poetry.
After a few months, a group of colleagues who shared his love of poetry and wine came together, and they visited one another for flower-viewing and willow-gazing.
It was the middle of the ninth month, when one of Master Bai's students sent twelve pots of chrysanthemums that were placed at the foot of the steps outside the study.
There were cockscomb-shaped purple ones, the variety called Drunken Imperial Consort, and the variety called Silver Crane Feather — every pot contained a fine variety.
Their deep fragrance and sparse, graceful form cast shadows across the entire curtain; it was no less striking than twelve golden hairpins arranged like a screen.
Master Bai was greatly delighted and every day enjoyed them over wine.
That very day, while he was reciting poetry and admiring the flowers, he suddenly received the report that Academician Wu and Censor Su had come to call.
This Academician Wu was Master Bai's brother-in-law; his name was Wu Gui, his courtesy name was Ruian, he was from the same hometown as Master Bai, and he was a man who placed the greatest importance on loyalty and righteousness.
This Censor Su was named Su Yuan, with the courtesy name Fanghui; although he was a jinshi from the Henan register, his ancestral home was also Jinling.
He was also a classmate of Master Bai, having passed the examinations in the same year, and because they associated over poetry and wine, the three men were on very close terms.
In their leisure time from official duties, it was always one visiting the other, back and forth.
Hearing that the two had come, Master Bai hurried out to welcome them.
The three men were accustomed to each other's company and their affection was deep, so there was not the slightest formality between them.
As soon as they met, Master Bai smiled and said: 'These past two days the chrysanthemums have been in full glorious bloom — why did you two brothers not come to admire them?'
Academician Wu said: 'The day before yesterday, Li Niantai was appointed to the Nanzhili Academy, and I was at his farewell banquet so I had no time.
Last night I was just about to come and admire the flowers, but the moment I stepped out the door, that tiresome old Yang appeared with a congratulatory essay, standing there waiting for it to be written as a birthday tribute to the Grand Commander Shi's wife, and that wasted another day.
