앨리스는 세 정원사처럼 땅에 엎드려야 하는 게 아닐까 하는 의문이 들었지만, 행렬에서 그런 규칙이 있다는 말을 들어본 기억이 없었다.

Alice was rather doubtful whether she ought not to lie down on her face like the three gardeners, but she could not remember ever having heard of such a rule at processions;

"게다가 사람들이 모두 얼굴을 땅에 대고 누워서 볼 수도 없다면, 행렬이 무슨 소용이 있겠어?" 하고 그녀는 생각했다.

"and besides, what would be the use of a procession," thought she, "if people had all to lie down upon their faces, so that they couldn't see it?"

So she stood still where she was, and waited.

행렬이 앨리스 맞은편에 이르렀을 때, 모두 멈춰 서서 그녀를 바라보았고, 여왕은 엄하게 "이 애는 누구냐?" 하고 물었다.

When the procession came opposite to Alice, they all stopped and looked at her, and the Queen said severely "Who is this?"

She said it to the Knave of Hearts, who only bowed and smiled in reply.

"And who are _these?_" said the Queen, pointing to the three gardeners who were lying round the rose-tree;
