出発の時刻がもう間近だったので、他の誰かに聞く時間もなかった。何もかもがとても不可解で、決して気持ちの落ち着くものではなかった。
It was so near the time of starting that I had no time to ask any one else, for it was all very mysterious and not by any means comforting.
出発する直前に、老婦人が私の部屋へやって来て、ひどく取り乱した様子でこう言った。
Just before I was leaving, the old lady came up to my room and said in a very hysterical way:

"Must you go? Oh! young Herr, must you go?"

She was in such an excited state that she seemed to have lost her grip of what German she knew, and mixed it all up with some other language which I did not know at all.

I was just able to follow her by asking many questions.

When I told her that I must go at once, and that I was engaged on important business, she asked again:

"Do you know what day it is?" I answered that it was the fourth of May.
彼女は首を横に振りながら、再び言った。
She shook her head as she said again:
「ええ、そんなことは知っています！知っていますとも。でも、今日が何の日かご存じですか？」
"Oh, yes! I know that! I know that, but do you know what day it is?"
私が理解できないと言うと、彼女は続けた。
On my saying that I did not understand, she went on:
「今夜は聖ジョージの祭日の前夜です。時計が真夜中を打つとき、この世のあらゆる邪悪なものが完全に力を振るうことになるのを、ご存じないのですか？
"It is the eve of St. George's Day. Do you not know that to-night, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway?
あなたはどこへ行こうとしているのか、何のために行くのか、ご存じなのですか？」
Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to?"
彼女があまりにも明らかに苦悩している様子だったので、私はなだめようとしたが、効果はなかった。
