A man who had been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped, and shivered, and glared, and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his head as he seized me by the chin.

물에 흠뻑 젖고, 진흙에 뒤덮이고, 돌에 발을 절게 되고, 부싯돌에 베이고, 쐐기풀에 쏘이고, 가시덤불에 찢긴 사내였다. 그는 절뚝거리고, 떨고, 노려보고, 으르렁거렸으며, 내 턱을 움켜쥐었을 때 그의 머릿속에서 이가 딱딱 맞부딪혔다.

"Oh! Don't cut my throat, sir," I pleaded in terror. "Pray don't do it, sir."

"오! 제발 제 목을 베지 마세요, 나리," 나는 공포에 질려 애원했다. "제발 그러지 마세요, 나리."

"Tell us your name!" said the man. "Quick!"

"이름을 대라!" 사내가 말했다. "빨리!"

"Pip, sir."

"핍이요, 나리."

"Once more," said the man, staring at me. "Give it mouth!"

"다시 한번," 사내가 나를 빤히 바라보며 말했다. "입으로 말해봐!"

"Pip. Pip, sir."

"핍. 핍이요, 나리."

"Show us where you live," said the man. "Pint out the place!"

"네가 사는 곳을 보여줘," 사내가 말했다. "그 장소를 가리켜봐!"

I pointed to where our village lay, on the flat in-shore among the alder-trees and pollards, a mile or more from the church.

나는 우리 마을이 있는 곳을 가리켰다. 교회에서 1마일 이상 떨어진, 오리나무와 가지치기한 나무들 사이 평평한 해안가였다.

The man, after looking at me for a moment, turned me upside down, and emptied my pockets.

사내는 잠시 나를 바라보더니, 나를 거꾸로 뒤집어 내 주머니를 털었다.

There was nothing in them but a piece of bread.

주머니 안에는 빵 한 조각밖에 없었다.

When the church came to itself,—for he was so sudden and strong that he made it go head over heels before me, and I saw the steeple under my feet,—when the church came to itself, I say, I was seated on a high tombstone, trembling while he ate the bread ravenously.

교회가 제자리를 찾았을 때,—그가 너무나 갑작스럽고 강하게 움직이는 바람에 내 눈앞에서 교회가 공중제비를 도는 것처럼 보였고, 나는 내 발 아래에 첨탑이 보였다,—교회가 제자리를 찾았을 때, 나는 말하자면, 높다란 묘비 위에 앉아 떨고 있었고, 그는 빵을 게걸스럽게 먹어치우고 있었다.

"You young dog," said the man, licking his lips, "what fat cheeks you ha' got."

I believe they were fat, though I was at that time undersized for my years, and not strong.
