저녁이 되면 마을에 도착할 것입니다.

You will reach a village in the evening;

그곳에 도착하면 서로 마주보고 있는 두 여관을 보게 될 것입니다.

and when you get there, you will see two inns opposite to each other,

그 중 하나는 보기에 매우 즐겁고 아름답습니다.

one of which is very pleasant and beautiful to look at:

그곳에는 들어가지 말고, 비록 매우 초라하고 볼품없어 보일지라도 다른 여관에서 하룻밤을 쉬십시오.

go not in there, but rest for the night in the other, though it may appear to you to be very poor and mean.

하지만 아들은 속으로 생각했습니다. '이런 짐승이 이 일에 대해 무엇을 알겠어?'

But the son thought to himself, 'What can such a beast as this know about the matter?'

그래서 그는 여우를 향해 화살을 쏘았지만 빗나쳤고, 여우는 꼬리를 등 위로 치켜세우고 숲 속으로 달아났습니다.

So he shot his arrow at the fox; but he missed it, and it set up its tail above its back and ran into the wood.

그런 다음 그는 길을 떠나 저녁이 되자 두 여관이 있는 마을에 도착했습니다.

Then he went his way, and in the evening came to the village where the two inns were;

그 중 한 여관에서는 사람들이 노래하고 춤추며 잔치를 벌이고 있었지만, 다른 여관은 매우 지저분하고 초라해 보였습니다.

and in one of these were people singing, and dancing, and feasting; but the other looked very dirty, and poor.

'내가 저 초라한 집에 가고 이 매력적인 곳을 떠난다면 정말 어리석은 짓일 거야.'

'I should be very silly,' said he, 'if I went to that shabby house, and left this charming place';

그래서 그는 화려한 여관으로 들어가 마음껏 먹고 마시며, 새의 일도 자신의 나라도 잊어버렸습니다.

so he went into the smart house, and ate and drank at his ease, and forgot the bird, and his country too.

시간이 흘렀습니다. 첫째 아들이 돌아오지 않고 아무런 소식도 들리지 않자, 둘째 아들이 길을 떠났고 그에게도 똑같은 일이 일어났습니다.

Time passed on; and as the eldest son did not come back, and no tidings were heard of him, the second son set out, and the same thing happened to him.
