In order to live in accord with nature, it is necessary to know what nature is; and to this end a threefold division of philosophy is made—into _Physics_, dealing with the universe and its laws, the problems of divine government and teleology; _Logic_, which trains the mind to discern true from false; and _Ethics_, which applies the knowledge thus gained and tested to practical life.
Per vivere in accordo con la natura, è necessario sapere che cosa sia la natura; e a tal fine si opera una triplice divisione della filosofia—in _Fisica_, che tratta dell'universo e delle sue leggi, dei problemi del governo divino e della teleologia; _Logica_, che addestra la mente a distinguere il vero dal falso; ed _Etica_, che applica la conoscenza così acquisita e verificata alla vita pratica.
