그래도 그는 전반적으로 그들을 좋아했고, 웬디에게 요정의 시작에 대해 이야기해 주었다.

Still, he liked them on the whole, and he told her about the beginning of fairies.

"있잖아, 웬디, 첫 번째 아기가 처음으로 웃었을 때, 그 웃음이 천 조각으로 부서져서 모두 이리저리 뛰어다니기 시작했는데, 그게 바로 요정의 시작이었어."

"You see, Wendy, when the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies."

지루한 이야기였지만, 집에만 있는 그녀는 그런 이야기가 좋았다.

Tedious talk this, but being a stay-at-home she liked it.

"그러니까," 그는 상냥하게 말을 이었다, "남자아이와 여자아이 한 명 한 명마다 요정이 한 명씩 있어야 해."

"And so," he went on good-naturedly, "there ought to be one fairy for every boy and girl."

"있어야 한다고? 있지 않아?"

"Ought to be? Isn't there?"

"아니. 있잖아, 요즘 아이들은 너무 많이 알아서, 금세 요정을 믿지 않게 돼. 그리고 아이가 '나는 요정을 믿지 않아'라고 말할 때마다, 어딘가에 있는 요정 하나가 쓰러져 죽어."

"No. You see children know such a lot now, they soon don't believe in fairies, and every time a child says, 'I don't believe in fairies,' there is a fairy somewhere that falls down dead."

사실 그는 이제 요정에 대한 이야기를 충분히 했다고 생각했고, 팅커 벨이 매우 조용히 있다는 것이 문득 마음에 걸렸다.

Really, he thought they had now talked enough about fairies, and it struck him that Tinker Bell was keeping very quiet.

"그녀가 어디 갔는지 모르겠어," 그가 일어서며 말하고는, 팅크를 이름으로 불렀다.

"I can't think where she has gone to," he said, rising, and he called Tink by name.

웬디의 심장이 갑작스러운 설렘으로 두근거렸다.

Wendy's heart went flutter with a sudden thrill.

"피터," 그녀가 그를 붙잡으며 외쳤다, "이 방 안에 요정이 있다는 말은 아니겠지!"

"Peter," she cried, clutching him, "you don't mean to tell me that there is a fairy in this room!"

"방금 전까지 여기 있었는데," 그가 약간 짜증스럽게 말했다. "소리가 안 들려?" 그러면서 둘 다 귀를 기울였다.

"She was here just now," he said a little impatiently. "You don't hear her, do you?" and they both listened.

"내가 듣는 유일한 소리는," 웬디가 말했다, "종소리 같은 거야."

"The only sound I hear," said Wendy, "is like a tinkle of bells."

"맞아, 그게 팅크야, 요정의 언어야. 나도 들리는 것 같아."

"Well, that's Tink, that's the fairy language. I think I hear her too."

소리는 서랍장 쪽에서 들려왔고, 피터는 즐거운 표정을 지었다.

The sound came from the chest of drawers, and Peter made a merry face.
