존은 불운한 해적의 입을 두 손으로 틀어막아 죽어가는 신음 소리를 억눌렀다.

John clapped his hands on the ill-fated pirate's mouth to stifle the dying groan.

그는 앞으로 쓰러졌다.

He fell forward.

네 소년이 쿵 하는 소리를 막으려고 그를 붙들었다.

Four boys caught him to prevent the thud.

피터가 신호를 보냈고, 시체는 바다 밖으로 던져졌다.

Peter gave the signal, and the carrion was cast overboard.

물 튀기는 소리가 들렸고, 그 다음엔 정적이 흘렀다.

There was a splash, and then silence.

얼마나 걸렸을까?

How long has it taken?

"하나!" (슬라이틀리가 세기 시작했다.)

"One!" (Slightly had begun to count.)

아슬아슬하게 간신히, 피터는 온몸을 발끝으로 세운 채 선실 안으로 사라졌다. 한 명 이상의 해적이 용기를 끌어모아 뒤를 돌아보려 하고 있었기 때문이다.

None too soon, Peter, every inch of him on tiptoe, vanished into the cabin; for more than one pirate was screwing up his courage to look round.

이제 그들은 서로의 괴로운 숨소리를 들을 수 있었고, 그것은 더 무시무시한 소리가 지나갔음을 알려주었다.

They could hear each other's distressed breathing now, which showed them that the more terrible sound had passed.

Slowly Hook let his head emerge from his ruff, and listened so intently that he could have caught the echo of the tick.

아무 소리도 없었고, 그는 꼿꼿이 몸을 세워 최대한 키를 높였다.

There was not a sound, and he drew himself up firmly to his full height.

"그렇다면 조니 플랭크를 위하여!" 그는 뻔뻔하게 외쳤다. 소년들이 자신이 나약해지는 모습을 보았기 때문에 그 어느 때보다 그들이 더욱 미웠다.

"Then here's to Johnny Plank!" he cried brazenly, hating the boys more than ever because they had seen him unbend.

He broke into the villainous ditty:

"요호, 요호, 흔들리는 널빤지, / 넌 그 위를 걸어가지, / 널빤지가 내려가면 너도 내려가 / 저 아래 데이비 존스에게로!"

"Yo ho, yo ho, the frisky plank, / You walks along it so, / Till it goes down and you goes down / To Davy Jones below!"

포로들을 더욱 공포에 떨게 하려고, 어느 정도 체면을 잃더라도, 그는 상상의 널빤지 위를 춤추듯 걷고 노래를 부르면서 그들을 향해 우스꽝스러운 표정을 지었다. 그리고 노래가 끝나자 그는 외쳤다. "널빤지 위를 걷기 전에 고양이 채찍 맛을 한번 볼래?"

To terrorise the prisoners the more, though with a certain loss of dignity, he danced along an imaginary plank, grimacing at them as he sang; and when he finished he cried, "Do you want a touch of the cat before you walk the plank?"
