that there cannot be done a greater mischief to prince and people, than the propagating wrong notions concerning government; that so at last all times might not have reason to complain of the Drum Ecclesiastic.

統治に関する誤った概念を広めることほど、君主と民衆に大きな害悪をなすものはないということ、そして最終的にはいかなる時代も教会の太鼓について不満を言う理由を持たないようにということである。

If any one, concerned really for truth, undertake the confutation of my Hypothesis, I promise him either to recant my mistake, upon fair conviction; or to answer his difficulties.

もし真実を真剣に求める者が私の仮説の反駁を試みるならば、私は公正な論証によって誤りを認めるか、あるいはその難点に答えることを約束する。

But he must remember two things.

しかし彼は二つのことを覚えておかなければならない。

First, That cavilling here and there, at some expression, or little incident of my discourse, is not an answer to my book.

第一に、私の論述のある表現や些細な点についてあちこち難癖をつけることは、私の書への答えとはならないということである。

Secondly, That I shall not take railing for arguments, nor think either of these worth my notice, though I shall always look on myself as bound to give satisfaction to any one, who shall appear to be conscientiously scrupulous in the point, and shall shew any just grounds for his scruples.

第二に、私は罵倒を論拠とは見なさず、これらのどちらも注意に値するとは思わないということである。ただし、その点について良心的に慎重であることが明らかで、その疑念について正当な根拠を示す者には、常に満足のいく回答を与える義務があると自らに課すものである。

I have nothing more, but to advertise the reader, that Observations stands for Observations on Hobbs, Milton, &c. and that a bare quotation of pages always means pages of his Patriarcha, Edition 1680.

読者に知らせておくべきことは他にないが、「考察」とはホッブズ、ミルトンなどに関する考察を指し、単なるページの引用は常に1680年版の彼の『家父長論』のページを意味するということである。
