'Ah, whence to-day's so sweet release,

すべての憂いを晴らすこの軽やかな光、

この自由な良心、この豊かな平和、

These softly folded wings of prayer,

この祈りの柔らかく折り畳まれた翼よ、

'This calm and more than conquering love,

「この穏やかにして征服をも超える愛、

With which nought evil dares to cope,

いかなる悪もこれに敢えて立ち向かえぬ、

This joy that lifts no glance above,

この喜びは視線を上へ向けることもなく、

For faith too sure, too sweet for hope?

信仰はあまりに確かで、希望には甘すぎるゆえ。

'O, happy time, too happy change,

「おお、幸福なる時、あまりにも幸福なる変化よ、

It will not live, though fondly nurst!

大切に育まれようとも、それは長くは続くまい!

Full soon the sun will seem as strange

やがて太陽も奇妙に見えるだろう、

As now the cloud which seems dispersed.'

今は晴れたかに見えるあの雲のように。」

And well she knew that I knew well

And, answering now the luncheon bell,

I laugh'd at Mildred's laugh, which made
