Yet suffer me to speak, since I speak to Thy mercy, and not to scornful man.

Contudo, permite-me falar, pois falo à Tua misericórdia, e não ao homem desdenhoso.

Thou too, perhaps, despisest me, yet wilt Thou return and have compassion upon me.

Tu também, talvez, me desprezes, contudo voltarás e terás compaixão de mim.

For what would I say, O Lord my God, but that I know not whence I came into this dying life (shall I call it?) or living death.

Pois o que diria eu, ó Senhor meu Deus, senão que não sei de onde vim para esta vida que morre (assim a chamarei?) ou morte que vive.

Then immediately did the comforts of Thy compassion take me up, as I heard (for I remember it not) from the parents of my flesh, out of whose substance Thou didst sometime fashion me.

Logo então os confortos da Tua compaixão me acolheram, como ouvi dizer (pois disso não me recordo) dos pais da minha carne, de cuja substância Tu, em certo tempo, me formaste.

Thus there received me the comforts of woman's milk.

Assim me acolheram os confortos do leite feminino.

For neither my mother nor my nurses stored their own breasts for me; but Thou didst bestow the food of my infancy through them, according to Thine ordinance, whereby Thou distributest Thy riches through the hidden springs of all things.

Pois nem a minha mãe nem as minhas amas guardaram os seus próprios seios para mim; mas Tu concedeste o alimento da minha infância por meio delas, segundo a Tua ordenação, pela qual distribuis as Tuas riquezas pelas fontes ocultas de todas as coisas.

Thou also gavest me to desire no more than Thou gavest; and to my nurses willingly to give me what Thou gavest them.

Tu também me fizeste desejar não mais do que Tu davas; e às minhas amas, dar-me de boa vontade o que Tu lhes davas.

For they, with a heaven-taught affection, willingly gave me what they abounded with from Thee.

Pois elas, com um afeto ensinado pelo céu, davam-me de boa vontade o que delas transbordava por obra Tua.

For this my good from them, was good for them.

Pois este meu bem vindo delas era também um bem para elas.

Nor, indeed, from them was it, but through them; for from Thee, O God, are all good things, and from my God is all my health.

Nem, na verdade, provinha delas, mas através delas; pois de Ti, ó Deus, vêm todas as coisas boas, e do meu Deus vem toda a minha saúde.

This I since learned, Thou, through these Thy gifts, within me and without, proclaiming Thyself unto me.
