神よ、聞いてください。ああ、人の罪よ！人はそう言い、あなたは彼を憐れんでくださいます。
Hear, O God. Alas, for man's sin! So saith man, and Thou pitiest him;
あなたが彼を造られたからです。しかし、彼の中の罪はあなたが造られたものではありません。
for Thou madest him, but sin in him Thou madest not.
誰が私に幼少期の罪を思い起こさせるのでしょうか？あなたの御前では、罪から清い者は一人もおらず、地上でたった一日しか生きていない幼子でさえそうなのです。
Who remindeth me of the sins of my infancy? for in Thy sight none is pure from sin, not even the infant whose life is but a day upon the earth.
誰が私に思い起こさせるのでしょうか？私自身が覚えていない自分の姿を、小さな幼子の中に見るとき、その幼子こそがそうさせるのではないでしょうか？
Who remindeth me? doth not each little infant, in whom I see what of myself I remember not?
では、私の罪とは何だったのでしょうか？乳房にしがみついて泣いたことでしょうか？
What then was my sin? was it that I hung upon the breast and cried?
なぜなら、もし今の私が自分の年齢にふさわしい食べ物を求めてそうするなら、当然笑われ、叱られるべきだからです。
for should I now so do for food suitable to my age, justly should I be laughed at and reproved.
私がその時したことは叱責に値するものでした。しかし私は叱責を理解できなかったので、慣習と理性が私を叱責することを禁じていたのです。
What I then did was worthy reproof; but since I could not understand reproof, custom and reason forbade me to be reproved.
というのも、成長すれば、そのような習慣は根こそぎ取り除き、捨て去るものだからです。
For those habits, when grown, we root out and cast away.
今や、剪定をする者でさえ、良いものをわざわざ捨てるようなことはしません。
Now no man, though he prunes, wittingly casts away what is good.
それとも、与えられれば害になるものを求めて泣くことが、しばらくの間であっても良いことだったのでしょうか？
Or was it then good, even for a while, to cry for what, if given, would hurt?
自由な身の人々や、自分より年上の者たち、そして自分を生んだ張本人たちでさえ、自分に仕えないことを激しく憤ることが？
bitterly to resent, that persons free, and its own elders, yea, the very authors of its birth, served it not?
自分より賢い多くの人々が、自分の好む意向にうなずかなかったことが？
that many besides, wiser than it, obeyed not the nod of its good pleasure?
命令が聞き入れられなかったからといって、できる限り打ちかかり傷つけようとすることが――しかしその命令が聞き入れられていたなら、自分が傷ついていたはずなのに？
to do its best to strike and hurt, because commands were not obeyed, which had been obeyed to its hurt?
それゆえ、幼子の無実は、その意志ではなく、幼子の手足の弱さにあるのです。
The weakness then of infant limbs, not its will, is its innocence.
