求你听我，上帝啊。唉，人的罪孽！人如此哀叹，而你怜悯他；
Hear, O God. Alas, for man's sin! So saith man, and Thou pitiest him;
因为你造了他，却并非你造了他里面的罪。谁能使我想起我幼年的罪孽？
for Thou madest him, but sin in him Thou madest not. Who remindeth me of the sins of my infancy?
因为在你眼中，无人能脱离罪孽，就连那在世上只活了一天的婴孩也不例外。
for in Thy sight none is pure from sin, not even the infant whose life is but a day upon the earth.
谁能使我想起这些？难道不是那些幼小的婴孩吗——在他们身上，我看到了自己已记不清的过去？
Who remindeth me? doth not each little infant, in whom I see what of myself I remember not?
那么我的罪是什么呢？难道是因为我挂在母亲胸前哭泣？
What then was my sin? was it that I hung upon the breast and cried?
若我如今为了适合我年龄的食物而这样做，理当受人嘲笑和责备。
for should I now so do for food suitable to my age, justly should I be laughed at and reproved.
我当时的所作所为确实值得责备；但由于我那时无法理解责备，习俗与理性都不允许人责备我。
What I then did was worthy reproof; but since I could not understand reproof, custom and reason forbade me to be reproved.
因为那些习性在我们长大后，我们会将其连根拔除、抛弃。
For those habits, when grown, we root out and cast away.
如今没有人会在修剪时，故意将好的东西丢弃。
Now no man, though he prunes, wittingly casts away what is good.
或者说，哭闹着索取那些若得到便会有害之物，难道当时就是好的吗，哪怕只是片刻？
Or was it then good, even for a while, to cry for what, if given, would hurt?
强烈地愤恨那些自由之人和年长于它的人，乃至亲生父母，因为他们不顺从它；
bitterly to resent, that persons free, and its own elders, yea, the very authors of its birth, served it not?
还有许多比它更有智慧的人，也不顺从它的意愿点头称是；
that many besides, wiser than it, obeyed not the nod of its good pleasure?
竭尽全力地击打和伤害人，只因命令没有被服从——而那些命令若被服从，反而会害了它自己？
to do its best to strike and hurt, because commands were not obeyed, which had been obeyed to its hurt?
那么，婴孩的无辜，不在于其意志，而在于其肢体的软弱。
The weakness then of infant limbs, not its will, is its innocence.
