"Well, then, after this first visit has been made we shall count on you."

"Ah, ha," said the shipowner, "I am not in the least surprised, for she has been to me three times, inquiring if there were any news of the _Pharaon_. _Peste!_ Edmond, you have a very handsome mistress!"

« Ah, ah, » dit l'armateur, « je n'en suis pas le moins du monde surpris, car elle est venue me trouver trois fois, demandant s'il y avait des nouvelles du _Pharaon_. _Peste !_ Edmond, vous avez une bien belle maîtresse ! »

"She is not my mistress," replied the young sailor, gravely; "she is my betrothed."

« Elle n'est pas ma maîtresse, » répondit le jeune marin, gravement ; « elle est ma fiancée. »

"Sometimes one and the same thing," said Morrel, with a smile.
