この我らが死すべき命の旅路の中ほどで、
In the midway of this our mortal life,
私は薄暗い森の中で道に迷っていた、
I found me in a gloomy wood, astray
まっすぐな道から外れて：そのことを語るだけでも
Gone from the path direct: and e'en to tell
容易なことではない、いかに荒々しく野性的であったか
It were no easy task, how savage wild
あの森が、いかに力強く荒々しくその木々が茂っていたか、
That forest, how robust and rough its growth,
それを思い出すだけで、私の恐怖は
Which to remember only, my dismay
死に近い苦しみの中で、再びよみがえる。
Renews, in bitterness not far from death.
しかし、そこで出会った善いことを語るために、
Yet to discourse of what there good befell,
そこで発見した他のすべてのことも語ろう。
All else will I relate discover'd there.
最初にどのようにそこへ入ったか、私にはほとんど言えない、
How first I enter'd it I scarce can say,
その瞬間、眠気のような重さが
Such sleepy dullness in that instant weigh'd
私の感覚を押しつぶした、正しい道を離れたとき、
My senses down, when the true path I left,

But when a mountain's foot I reach'd, where clos'd

The valley, that had pierc'd my heart with dread,

I look'd aloft, and saw his shoulders broad
すでにあの惑星の光を纏っているのを見た、
Already vested with that planet's beam,
あらゆる迷える者を安全にすべての道を導く惑星の。
Who leads all wanderers safe through every way.
すると恐怖がしばし和らいだ、
Then was a little respite to the fear,
その恐怖は私の心の奥深くに宿っていた、
That in my heart's recesses deep had lain,
あの夜のすべてを通じて、あわれにも過ぎ去った夜の間：
All of that night, so pitifully pass'd:
そして一人の人のように、苦しい短い息で、
And as a man, with difficult short breath,
苦労に疲れ果て、海から岸へと逃れた者が、
Forespent with toiling, 'scap'd from sea to shore,
危険な広大な荒海を振り返り、立ち尽くす；
Turns to the perilous wide waste, and stands
見つめながら；そのように私の魂も、まだ力尽きながら
At gaze; e'en so my spirit, that yet fail'd
恐怖と格闘しながら、あの難所を振り返った、
Struggling with terror, turn'd to view the straits,
誰一人通り抜けて生き延びた者のいない難所を。私の疲れ果てた体は
That none hath pass'd and liv'd. My weary frame
しばしの休息の後に気力を取り戻し、再び
After short pause recomforted, again
