「穿越我，你将进入悲苦之城：
"Through me you pass into the city of woe:
穿越我，你将进入永恒的痛苦：
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
穿越我，你将进入永远迷失之人的世界。
Through me among the people lost for aye.
正义推动了我的建造者：
Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd:
建造我是神圣力量的使命，
To rear me was the task of power divine,
至高的智慧，与原初的爱。
Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.
在我之前，被创造之物皆不存在，唯有永恒之物，
Before me things create were none, save things Eternal,
而我亦将永恒长存。
and eternal I endure.
「凡入此处者，抛弃一切希望。」
"All hope abandon ye who enter here."
如此文字，我以昏暗的色调辨认，
Such characters in colour dim I mark'd
铭刻于一道门楼的高耸拱门之上：
Over a portal's lofty arch inscrib'd:
于是我说道：「师父，这些文字含义艰深。」
Whereat I thus: "Master, these words import Hard meaning."
他如同早有准备般答道：
He as one prepar'd replied:
「在此，你必须将一切疑虑抛诸脑后；
"Here thou must all distrust behind thee leave;
在此，让卑劣的恐惧熄灭。我们来到了
Here be vile fear extinguish'd. We are come

To misery doom'd, who intellectual good Have lost."
当他伸出手来握住我的手，
And when his hand he had stretch'd forth To mine,

with pleasant looks, whence I was cheer'd,

Into that secret place he led me on.

Here sighs with lamentations and loud moans
在无星之光穿透的空气中回响，
Resounded through the air pierc'd by no star,
令我甫一踏入便已潸然泪下。各种语言，
That e'en I wept at entering. Various tongues,
可怖的话语，悲苦的叫喊，
Horrible languages, outcries of woe,
愤怒的音调，低沉而嘶哑的声音，
Accents of anger, voices deep and hoarse,
双手相击使声响更加宏大，
With hands together smote that swell'd the sounds,
汇成一片喧嚣，永远旋转回荡，
Made up a tumult, that for ever whirls
穿越那被浓重黑暗染污的空气，
Round through that air with solid darkness stain'd,
恰如旋风中飞舞的沙粒。
Like to the sand that in the whirlwind flies.
我当时仍为迷惑所笼罩，呼道：
I then, with error yet encompass'd, cried:
「啊，师父！我听到的是什么？这是哪些人，
"O master! What is this I hear? What race Are these,
