这时汤姆猛地抬起头，茫然地环顾了一下车库，然后含混不清地对警察嘟囔了一句。

Presently Tom lifted his head with a jerk and, after staring around the garage with glazed eyes, addressed a mumbled incoherent remark to the policeman.

警察正在说："M-a-v——"

"M-a-v—" the policeman was saying, "—o—"

"不，是r——"那人纠正道，"M-a-v-r-o——"

"No, r—" corrected the man, "M-a-v-r-o—"

"听我说！"汤姆愤怒地低声说道。

"Listen to me!" muttered Tom fiercely.

警察继续念道："r——o——"

"r—" said the policeman, "o—"

"g——"

"g—"

"g——"他抬起头，汤姆那宽大的手掌猛地拍在他肩膀上。

"g—" He looked up as Tom's broad hand fell sharply on his shoulder.

"What you want, fella?"

"Auto hit her. Ins'antly killed."
