PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION

初版序文

This translation is intended to supplement a work entitled "The Authoress of the Odyssey", which I published in 1897.

この翻訳は、私が1897年に出版した『オデュッセイアの女性作者』と題する著作を補完することを目的としている。

I could not give the whole "Odyssey" in that book without making it unwieldy, I therefore epitomised my translation, which was already completed and which I now publish in full.

あの書物に『オデュッセイア』の全文を収めれば扱いにくいものになってしまうため、すでに完成していた翻訳を要約して掲載したが、今回それを全文出版するものである。

I shall not here argue the two main points dealt with in the work just mentioned; I have nothing either to add to, or to withdraw from, what I have there written.

ここでは、先に述べた著作で扱った二つの主要な論点については論じない。そこに書いたことに対して、付け加えることも、撤回することも何もない。
