PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION

초판 서문

This translation is intended to supplement a work entitled "The Authoress of the Odyssey", which I published in 1897.

이 번역은 제가 1897년에 출판한 「오디세이의 여성 저자」라는 제목의 작품을 보완하기 위한 것입니다.

I could not give the whole "Odyssey" in that book without making it unwieldy, I therefore epitomised my translation, which was already completed and which I now publish in full.

저는 그 책에 「오디세이」 전체를 수록하면 너무 방대해질 것이기에 이미 완성되어 있던 번역을 요약하였으며, 이제 그것을 완전한 형태로 출판합니다.

I shall not here argue the two main points dealt with in the work just mentioned; I have nothing either to add to, or to withdraw from, what I have there written.

저는 여기서 방금 언급한 작품에서 다룬 두 가지 주요 논점에 대해 논하지 않겠습니다. 거기에 쓴 내용에 더하거나 철회할 것이 없습니다.
