The Prince — Page 10
In a letter to Francesco Vettori, dated 13th December 1513, he has left a very interesting description of his life at this period, which elucidates his methods and his motives in writing _The Prince_.
After describing his daily occupations with his family and neighbours, he writes: "The evening being come, I return home and go to my study;
가족과 이웃들과 함께하는 일상적인 일과를 묘사한 후, 그는 이렇게 쓴다: "저녁이 되면, 나는 집으로 돌아와 서재로 향한다;
at the entrance I pull off my peasant-clothes, covered with dust and dirt, and put on my noble court dress, and thus becomingly re-clothed I pass into the ancient courts of the men of old,
where, being lovingly received by them, I am fed with that food which is mine alone;
그곳에서 나는 그들의 따뜻한 환대를 받으며, 오직 나만을 위한 양식으로 배를 채운다;
where I do not hesitate to speak with them, and to ask for the reason of their actions, and they in their benignity answer me;
그곳에서 나는 그들과 거리낌 없이 대화를 나누고, 그들의 행동에 담긴 이유를 묻노라면, 그들은 자비로운 마음으로 나에게 답해준다;
and for four hours I feel no weariness, I forget every trouble, poverty does not dismay, death does not terrify me;
그리고 네 시간 동안 나는 피로를 느끼지 못하고, 모든 근심을 잊으며, 가난도 나를 낙담시키지 못하고, 죽음도 나를 두렵게 하지 못한다;
I am possessed entirely by those great men.
나는 온전히 그 위대한 인물들에게 사로잡힌다.
