The Thousand and One Nights, Vol. I.: Commonly Called the Arabian Nights' Entertainments — Page 7

English → Korean Preface Level 7/10

He has therefore wished me to remodel the preface, transferring all portions relating to the subjects in question to the Review, retaining whatever may more properly stand at the commencement of the work, and adding any matter of my own.

따라서 그는 내게 서문을 개편하여, 해당 주제들과 관련된 모든 부분은 리뷰로 옮기고, 작품의 서두에 더 적절히 위치할 수 있는 내용은 그대로 유지하며, 내 자신의 내용을 추가해 줄 것을 바랐다.

The object with which the translation was made is best expressed in the words of Mr. Lane's preface.

번역이 이루어진 목적은 레인 씨의 서문에 담긴 말로 가장 잘 표현된다.

"My undertaking to translate anew the Tales of 'The Thousand and One Nights' implies an unfavourable opinion of the version which has so long amused us; but I must express my objections with respect to the latter in plain terms, and this I shall do by means of a few words on the version of Galland, from which it is derived; for to him alone its chief faults are to be attributed.

"내가 『천일야화』를 새로이 번역하겠다고 나선 것은 오랫동안 우리를 즐겁게 해 온 기존 번역본에 대한 부정적인 견해를 내포한다. 그러나 나는 후자에 대한 내 반론을 명확한 말로 표현해야 하며, 이는 그것이 유래한 갈랑의 번역본에 대한 몇 마디를 통해 하고자 한다. 왜냐하면 그 주된 결함들은 오로지 그에게만 귀속되어야 하기 때문이다.

I am somewhat reluctant to make this remark, because several persons, and among them some of high and deserved reputation as Arabic scholars, have pronounced an opinion that his version is an _improvement_ upon the original.

나는 이 말을 하기가 다소 꺼려지는데, 여러 사람들이, 그 중에는 아랍어 학자로서 높고 마땅한 명성을 지닌 이들도 포함되어 있는데, 그의 번역본이 원작보다 _개선된_ 것이라는 의견을 표명했기 때문이다.

That 'The Thousand and One Nights' may be greatly improved, I most readily admit; but as confidently do I assert that Galland has excessively _perverted_ the work.

『천일야화』가 크게 개선될 수 있다는 점은 내가 기꺼이 인정한다. 그러나 갈랑이 이 작품을 지나치게 _왜곡했다_는 점도 나는 그에 못지않게 자신 있게 주장한다.
