민담 중 어느 것도 이야기꾼의 소유물로 여겨지지 않지만, 세 번째 분류에 속하는 이야기들만이 일반 사람들에게 널리 알려져 있다.
None of the folk-tales are considered as the property of the tellers, but only those of the third division are well known to the people in general.
첫 번째 분류에 속하는 이야기들은 건기에 마을 곳곳에서 사람들이 모닥불 주위에 모일 때를 제외하고는 좀처럼 들을 수 없다.
Those of the first section are seldom heard except during the dry season when the people gather around bonfires in various parts of the village.
그 자리에는 남녀가 함께 모이는데, 여자들은 목화를 잣고 남자들은 어망을 만들거나 도구와 무기를 수리한다.
To these go the men and women, the latter to spin cotton, the former to make fish nets or to repair their tools and weapons.

In such a gathering there are generally one or more persons who entertain their fellows with these tales.
그런 사람은 자신의 이야기에 대해 보수를 받지는 않지만, '태초의 이야기들'을 알고 있다는 사실이 그를 무리에서 환영받는 존재로 만들고 동료들의 눈에 부러움을 사는 위치를 안겨 준다.
Such a person is not paid for his services, but the fact that he knows "the stories of the first times" makes him a welcome addition to the company and gives him an enviable position in the estimation of his fellows.
디암이라 불리는 순수하게 의례적인 이야기들은 무속인들이 자신의 역할을 위한 수련의 일환으로 한 단어 한 단어씩 익히며, 동물에게 기름을 바르며 제물로 바칠 준비를 할 때나 다른 공물을 상위 존재에게 바치려 할 때에만 낭송된다.
The purely ritualistic tales, called diams, are learned word by word by the mediums, as a part of their training for their positions, and are only recited while an animal is being stroked with oil preparatory to its being sacrificed, or when some other gift is about to be presented to the superior beings.

The writer has recorded these diams from various mediums in widely separated towns and has found them quite uniform in text and content.
