War and Peace — Page 1

English → Japanese CHAPTER I Level 8/10

"Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes.

「ところで、王子よ、ジェノバとルッカはいまやボナパルト家の単なる私有地となってしまいましたね。

But I warn you, if you don't tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors perpetrated by that Antichrist—I really believe he is Antichrist—I will have nothing more to do with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my 'faithful slave,' as you call yourself!

しかし警告しておきますが、もしこれが戦争を意味すると言ってくださらないなら、あの反キリスト——本当に彼は反キリストだと思っていますが——が行った悪行と恐怖を擁護しようとするなら、もうあなたとは一切関わりません。あなたはもはや私の友人でも、あなた自身がそう呼ぶ「忠実な奴隷」でもありません!

But how do you do?

でも、お元気でしたか?

I see I have frightened you—sit down and tell me all the news."

驚かせてしまったようですね——どうぞお座りになって、近頃の様子を全部聞かせてください。」

It was in July, 1805, and the speaker was the well-known Anna Pávlovna Schérer, maid of honor and favorite of the Empress Márya Fëdorovna.

時は1805年7月、話していたのは、女官でマリヤ・フョードロヴナ皇后のお気に入りとして知られるアンナ・パーヴロヴナ・シェーレルであった。

With these words she greeted Prince Vasíli Kurágin, a man of high rank and importance, who was the first to arrive at her reception.

この言葉で彼女は、その夜会に最初に到着した高位高官の人物、ワシーリー・クラーギン公爵を迎えたのであった。

Anna Pávlovna had had a cough for some days.

アンナ・パーヴロヴナは数日前から咳をしていた。

She was, as she said, suffering from la grippe; grippe being then a new word in St. Petersburg, used only by the elite.

彼女は自分で言うように、インフルエンザ(la grippe)を患っていた。グリップというのは当時サンクトペテルブルクでは新しい言葉で、上流階級だけが使っていた。

All her invitations without exception, written in French, and delivered by a scarlet-liveried footman that morning, ran as follows:

その朝、緋色の制服を着た従僕によって届けられた、フランス語で書かれた彼女の招待状はすべて例外なく、次のような文面であった。

"If you have nothing better to do, Count (or Prince), and if the prospect of spending an evening with a poor invalid is not too terrible, I shall be very charmed to see you tonight between 7 and 10—Annette Schérer."

「もし他にご予定がなければ、伯爵様(あるいは王子様)、また病弱な者と夕べをお過ごしになることがそれほど苦痛でなければ、今夜7時から10時の間にお会いできれば大変嬉しく存じます——アネット・シェーレル。」

"Heavens! what a virulent attack!" replied the prince, not in the least disconcerted by this reception.

「これはこれは!なんと激しい攻撃でしょう!」と公爵は答えた。この出迎えに少しも動じた様子はなかった。
