War and Peace — Page 1

English → Korean CHAPTER I Level 8/10

"Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes.

"자, 공작님, 이제 제노아와 루카는 보나파르트 가문의 사유지에 불과하게 되었군요.

But I warn you, if you don't tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors perpetrated by that Antichrist—I really believe he is Antichrist—I will have nothing more to do with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my 'faithful slave,' as you call yourself!

하지만 경고하건대, 만약 이것이 전쟁을 의미한다고 말하지 않으신다면, 그리고 여전히 저 적그리스도가 저지른 추악하고 끔찍한 짓들을 변호하려 하신다면—저는 정말로 그가 적그리스도라고 믿습니다—저는 더 이상 당신과 아무런 관계도 맺지 않을 것이며, 당신은 더 이상 제 친구도, 스스로 부르시듯 저의 '충실한 노예'도 아닐 것입니다!

But how do you do?

그런데 어떻게 지내세요?

I see I have frightened you—sit down and tell me all the news."

제가 당신을 놀라게 한 것 같군요—앉아서 소식을 다 전해 주세요."

It was in July, 1805, and the speaker was the well-known Anna Pávlovna Schérer, maid of honor and favorite of the Empress Márya Fëdorovna.

때는 1805년 7월이었고, 말을 하고 있는 사람은 황후 마리야 표도로브나의 시녀이자 총애를 받는 인물로 잘 알려진 안나 파블로브나 셰레르였다.

With these words she greeted Prince Vasíli Kurágin, a man of high rank and importance, who was the first to arrive at her reception.

이 말로 그녀는 자신의 야회에 가장 먼저 도착한 고위 귀족인 바실리 쿠라긴 공작을 맞이하였다.

Anna Pávlovna had had a cough for some days.

안나 파블로브나는 며칠째 기침을 앓고 있었다.

She was, as she said, suffering from la grippe; grippe being then a new word in St. Petersburg, used only by the elite.

그녀는 자신의 말에 따르면 독감으로 고생하고 있었는데, 독감이라는 말은 당시 상트페테르부르크에서 상류층만이 사용하는 새로운 단어였다.

All her invitations without exception, written in French, and delivered by a scarlet-liveried footman that morning, ran as follows:

그날 아침 진홍색 제복을 입은 하인이 배달한, 예외 없이 프랑스어로 쓰인 그녀의 초대장은 다음과 같았다:

"If you have nothing better to do, Count (or Prince), and if the prospect of spending an evening with a poor invalid is not too terrible, I shall be very charmed to see you tonight between 7 and 10—Annette Schérer."

"달리 하실 일이 없으시다면, 백작님(혹은 공작님), 그리고 불쌍한 병자와 저녁을 보내는 것이 그리 끔찍하지 않으시다면, 오늘 밤 7시에서 10시 사이에 뵙게 된다면 매우 기쁠 것입니다—안네트 셰레르."

"Heavens! what a virulent attack!" replied the prince, not in the least disconcerted by this reception.

"이런! 정말 맹렬한 공격이군요!" 공작은 이런 맞이를 받고도 조금도 당황하지 않고 대답하였다.
