Looking towards the landing-place, the tall figure of Sal of the Salt Sea was seen standing on the edge of the pier gazing down upon them.

선착장 쪽을 바라보니, 소금 바다의 살이라 불리는 키 큰 인물이 부두 끝에 서서 그들을 내려다보고 있는 것이 보였다.

"Foolish men! you have had your toil for nought, yet it is well for you that you could not reach the doomed ship.

"어리석은 자들이여! 너희는 헛수고를 했구나, 하지만 그 저주받은 배에 닿지 못한 것은 너희에게 다행스러운 일이다.

I warned you, and you disregarded me.

내가 너희에게 경고했건만, 너희는 나를 무시했다.

I commanded the winds and waves to stop your progress; they listened to my orders and obeyed me.

나는 바람과 파도에게 너희의 전진을 막으라 명했고, 그들은 내 명령을 듣고 복종했다.

You will not another time venture to disregard my warnings.

너희는 다음번에는 감히 내 경고를 무시하려 들지 못할 것이다.

Now go to your homes, and be thankful that I did not think fit to punish you for your folly.

이제 집으로 돌아가거라, 그리고 내가 너희의 어리석음을 벌하는 것이 적절치 않다고 여긴 것에 감사하여라.

Again I warn you that yonder ship is doomed! is doomed! is doomed!"

While the old woman was uttering these words in the same harsh, loud tones as before, Adam and his crew were making their way to the landing-place.

노파가 이전과 같이 거칠고 큰 목소리로 이 말들을 내뱉는 동안, 아담과 그의 선원들은 선착장 쪽으로 나아가고 있었다.

Before they reached it, however, the strange being had disappeared in the darkness, though her voice could be heard as she took her way apparently towards the cliffs.

그러나 그들이 선착장에 닿기 전에, 그 기이한 존재는 어둠 속으로 사라져 버렸고, 다만 그녀가 절벽 쪽으로 향하는 듯한 목소리만이 들려왔다.

"Again, lads, I say, don't let what you have heard from the poor mad woman trouble you," exclaimed Adam.

"다시 말하지만, 친구들, 그 불쌍한 미친 여자에게서 들은 말이 너희를 괴롭히게 내버려 두지 말게나," 아담이 외쳤다.

"Come to my cottage, and we will have a bite of supper, and wait till we have the chance of getting off again."

Dame Halliburt, expecting them, had prepared supper.

The sanded floors and rough chairs and stools which formed the furniture of her abode were not to be injured by their dripping garments.
