ルーシーは自分が身勝手だったと感じた。

Lucy felt that she had been selfish.

「シャーロット、私を甘やかしてはいけないわ。もちろん、あなたもアルノ川の眺めを楽しむべきよ。そういう意味だったの。表側の最初に空いた部屋を——」

"Charlotte, you mustn't spoil me: of course, you must look over the Arno, too. I meant that. The first vacant room in the front—"

「あなたがその部屋に入るべきよ」とバートレット嬢は言った。彼女の旅費の一部はルーシーの母親が負担していたのだが、それについては何かと上手く話題に出すことが多かった。

"You must have it," said Miss Bartlett, part of whose travelling expenses were paid by Lucy's mother—a piece of generosity to which she made many a tactful allusion.

「いいえ、だめよ。あなたがその部屋に入らなければ」

"No, no. You must have it."

「私が譲るわ。あなたのお母様はきっと私を許してくださらないもの、ルーシー」

"I insist on it. Your mother would never forgive me, Lucy."

「お母様は私を許さないでしょう」

"She would never forgive me."

二人の女性の声はだんだん熱を帯び、そして——悲しい真実を言えば——少々苛立ったものになっていった。

The ladies' voices grew animated, and—if the sad truth be owned—a little peevish.

二人は疲れていたし、無私無欲を装いながら言い争っていた。

They were tired, and under the guise of unselfishness they wrangled.

周囲に座っていた客の何人かが目配せをし合い、そのうちの一人——海外ではよく出会うような、礼儀をわきまえない類いの人物——がテーブル越しに身を乗り出し、あろうことか二人の議論に割り込んできた。

Some of their neighbours interchanged glances, and one of them—one of the ill-bred people whom one does meet abroad—leant forward over the table and actually intruded into their argument.

その人物はこう言った。

He said:

「私の部屋は眺めがいいんですよ、眺めがいい」

"I have a view, I have a view."

バートレット嬢はどきっとした。

Miss Bartlett was startled.

ペンションでは一般的に、他の客は一、二日様子を見てから話しかけてくるものだし、去ってしまってからようやく「気の合う人だった」と気づくことも多い。

Generally at a pension people looked them over for a day or two before speaking, and often did not find out that they would "do" till they had gone.

彼女はその闖入者を一目見るまでもなく、無作法な人間だとわかっていた。

She knew that the intruder was ill-bred, even before she glanced at him.

彼は年老いた男で、がっしりとした体格をしており、肌は白くひげを剃っていて、目が大きかった。

He was an old man, of heavy build, with a fair, shaven face and large eyes.

その目にはどこか子どものようなところがあったが、老耄のような子どもっぽさではなかった。

There was something childish in those eyes, though it was not the childishness of senility.

それが一体どんな子どもっぽさなのか、バートレット嬢はじっくり考えようとしなかった。視線がすぐに彼の服装へと移ってしまったからだ。

What exactly it was Miss Bartlett did not stop to consider, for her glance passed on to his clothes.

その服装は彼女の気に入らなかった。

These did not attract her.
