それでトムは誓いを書いた紙を取り出して、読み上げた。

So Tom got out a sheet of paper that he had wrote the oath on, and read it.

その誓いは、すべての仲間が団に忠実であり続け、秘密を決して漏らさないことを誓わせるものだった。

It swore every boy to stick to the band, and never tell any of the secrets;

そして、もし誰かが団の仲間に何か害を加えたなら、その者とその家族を殺すよう命じられた仲間は必ずそれを実行しなければならず、

and if anybody done anything to any boy in the band, whichever boy was ordered to kill that person and his family must do it,

その者たちを殺して胸に十字の傷をつけるまで、食べることも眠ることも許されなかった。その十字が団の印だった。

and he mustn't eat and he mustn't sleep till he had killed them and hacked a cross in their breasts, which was the sign of the band.

団に属さない者はその印を使うことができず、もし使った場合は訴えられなければならなかった。

And nobody that didn't belong to the band could use that mark, and if he did he must be sued;

そしてもう一度やった場合は殺されなければならなかった。

and if he done it again he must be killed.

また、団に属する者が秘密を漏らした場合は、喉を切られ、死体を焼かれて灰をあちこちに散らされ、

And if anybody that belonged to the band told the secrets, he must have his throat cut, and then have his carcass burnt up and the ashes scattered all around,

その名前は血で名簿から消され、団の仲間から二度と口にされず、呪いをかけられて永遠に忘れ去られることになっていた。

and his name blotted off of the list with blood and never mentioned again by the gang, but have a curse put on it and be forgot forever.

みんなは本当に素晴らしい誓いだと言い、トムに自分で考えたのかと聞いた。

Everybody said it was a real beautiful oath, and asked Tom if he got it out of his own head.

トムは、一部は自分で考えたが、残りは海賊の本や盗賊の本から取ったもので、一流の団はみんなそういうものを持っていると言った。

He said, some of it, but the rest was out of pirate-books and robber-books, and every gang that was high-toned had it.

秘密を漏らした仲間の家族も殺すべきだという意見を出す者もいた。

Some thought it would be good to kill the families of boys that told the secrets.

トムはそれはいい考えだと言い、鉛筆を取り出してそれを書き加えた。

Tom said it was a good idea, so he took a pencil and wrote it in.

mustn't: must notの短縮形。〜してはいけない。
eat: 食べる、食事をする。
sleep: 眠る、睡眠をとる。
till: 〜まで、〜するまで、という前置詞・接続詞。
killed: killの過去形・過去分詞。殺した。
hacked: hackの過去形。刃物で切り刻んだ。
cross: 十字形、バツ印。または横切る。
breasts: 胸、胸部（体の部位）。
which: どれ、どちら、という関係代名詞・疑問詞。
sign: 印、しるし、署名する。
nobody: 誰も〜ない、という否定の代名詞。
didn't: did notの短縮形。〜しなかった。
belong: 所属する、〜のものである。
could: canの過去形。〜できた、〜してもよかった。
use: 使う、利用する。
mark: 印、マーク、しるし。
did: doの過去形。した、行った。
sued: 訴訟を起こされた、法的に訴えられた。
again: 再び、もう一度。
belonged: belongの過去形。所属していた、属していた。
told: tellの過去形。話した、伝えた。
have: 持つ、所有する、という動詞。
throat: のど、咽喉。首の内側。
cut: 切る、切断する。
then: それから、その後、そのとき。
carcass: 死体、動物の死骸。
burnt: burnの過去形・過去分詞。燃やした、焼いた。
ashes: 灰、燃えた後に残る灰分。
scattered: scatterの過去形。散らばった、ばらまいた。
all: すべて、全部、全員。
around: 周りに、あちこちに、という副詞・前置詞。
name: 名前、氏名。
blotted: blotの過去形。消した、インクで汚した。
off: 離れて、取り除いて、という副詞・前置詞。
list: リスト、一覧表、名簿。

mentioned: mentionの過去形。言及した、話に出した。
gang: 仲間、グループ、不良集団。
