나는 다시 낡은 누더기를 입고 설탕 통 속으로 들어갔고, 자유롭고 만족스러웠다.

I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied.

그런데 톰 소여가 나를 찾아와서 강도단을 결성할 거라며, 내가 과부 댁으로 돌아가서 점잖게 지내면 함께할 수 있다고 했다.

But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable.

그래서 나는 돌아갔다.

So I went back.

과부는 나를 보고 울면서 불쌍한 길 잃은 어린 양이라고 불렀고, 그 밖에도 온갖 이름으로 불렀지만, 악의는 전혀 없었다.

The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too, but she never meant no harm by it.

과부는 나에게 다시 새 옷을 입혔고, 나는 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 온몸이 옥죄이는 느낌밖에 들지 않았다.

She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn't do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up.

그러자 예전의 그 일과가 다시 시작되었다.

Well, then, the old thing commenced again.

과부는 저녁 식사를 알리는 종을 쳤고, 제때에 나와야만 했다.

The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time.

식탁에 앉아도 바로 먹기 시작할 수 없었고, 과부가 고개를 숙이고 음식을 두고 중얼중얼 기도를 마칠 때까지 기다려야 했다. 사실 음식 자체에는 아무 문제도 없었는데 말이다.

When you got to the table you couldn't go right to eating, but you had to wait for the widow to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals, though there warn't really anything the matter with them.

단지 모든 음식이 따로따로 조리되었을 뿐이었다.

That is, nothing only everything was cooked by itself.

이것저것 뒤섞인 통 안에서는 사정이 다르다. 재료들이 서로 섞이고 국물이 어우러지면서 맛이 훨씬 더 좋아지는 법이다.

In a barrel of odds and ends it is different; things get mixed up, and the juice kind of swaps around, and the things go better.
