그래서 톰은 맹세문을 적어 놓은 종이 한 장을 꺼내서 읽었다.

So Tom got out a sheet of paper that he had wrote the oath on, and read it.

그 맹세문은 모든 단원이 패거리에 충성을 다하고, 절대로 비밀을 누설하지 않겠다는 내용이었다.

It swore every boy to stick to the band, and never tell any of the secrets;

그리고 만약 누군가가 패거리의 단원에게 해를 끼치면, 그 사람과 그의 가족을 죽이라는 명령을 받은 단원은 반드시 그것을 실행해야 했다.

and if anybody done anything to any boy in the band, whichever boy was ordered to kill that person and his family must do it,

그리고 그들을 죽이고 가슴에 십자가를 새길 때까지 먹지도 자지도 말아야 했는데, 그것이 패거리의 표시였다.

and he mustn't eat and he mustn't sleep till he had killed them and hacked a cross in their breasts, which was the sign of the band.

그리고 패거리에 속하지 않은 사람은 그 표시를 사용할 수 없었고, 만약 사용하면 고소를 당해야 했다.

And nobody that didn't belong to the band could use that mark, and if he did he must be sued;

그리고 다시 그것을 사용하면 죽임을 당해야 했다.

and if he done it again he must be killed.

그리고 패거리에 속한 사람이 비밀을 누설하면, 목이 잘리고 시체는 불태워져 재가 사방에 뿌려져야 했다.

And if anybody that belonged to the band told the secrets, he must have his throat cut, and then have his carcass burnt up and the ashes scattered all around,

그리고 그의 이름은 피로 명단에서 지워지고 패거리에서 다시는 언급되지 않으며, 저주를 받고 영원히 잊혀야 했다.

and his name blotted off of the list with blood and never mentioned again by the gang, but have a curse put on it and be forgot forever.

모두들 정말 멋진 맹세문이라고 말하며, 톰에게 스스로 생각해낸 것이냐고 물었다.

Everybody said it was a real beautiful oath, and asked Tom if he got it out of his own head.

그는 일부는 자기가 생각해낸 것이지만, 나머지는 해적 이야기책과 도적 이야기책에서 가져온 것이며, 격이 높은 패거리라면 다 그렇게 한다고 말했다.

He said, some of it, but the rest was out of pirate-books and robber-books, and every gang that was high-toned had it.

어떤 아이들은 비밀을 누설한 단원의 가족들도 죽이면 좋겠다고 생각했다.

Some thought it would be good to kill the families of boys that told the secrets.

톰은 그것이 좋은 생각이라고 말하며, 연필을 꺼내 그 내용을 써넣었다.

Tom said it was a good idea, so he took a pencil and wrote it in.
