It is a fact that slaves in the old world could be worshipped like Æsop, or loved like Uncle Remus.

옛 세계의 노예들이 이솝처럼 숭배받거나 엉클 리머스처럼 사랑받을 수 있었다는 것은 사실이다.

It is odd to note that both the great slaves told their best stories about beasts and birds.

두 위대한 노예 모두 짐승과 새에 관한 가장 훌륭한 이야기들을 들려주었다는 점은 흥미롭다.

But whatever be fairly due to Æsop, the human tradition called Fables is not due to him.

하지만 이솝에게 공정하게 돌려야 할 공로가 무엇이든 간에, 우화라 불리는 인류의 전통은 그에게서 비롯된 것이 아니다.

This had gone on long before any sarcastic freedman from Phrygia had or had not been flung off a precipice; this has remained long after.

It is to our advantage, indeed, to realise the distinction; because it makes Æsop more obviously effective than any other fabulist.

Grimm's Tales, glorious as they are, were collected by two German students.

And if we find it hard to be certain of a German student, at least we know more about him than We know about a Phrygian slave.

그리고 독일 학생에 대해 확신하기 어렵다 해도, 우리는 적어도 프리기아의 노예에 대해 아는 것보다는 그에 대해 더 많이 알고 있다.

The truth is, of course, that Æsop's Fables are not Æsop's fables, any more than Grimm's Fairy Tales were ever Grimm's fairy tales.

물론 진실은, 이솝 우화가 그림 동화가 결코 그림의 동화가 아니었던 것과 마찬가지로 이솝의 우화가 아니라는 것이다.

But the fable and the fairy tale are things utterly distinct.

There are many elements of difference; but the plainest is plain enough.

There can be no good fable with human beings in it.

There can be no good fairy tale without them.

Æsop, or Babrius (or whatever his name was), understood that, for a fable, all the persons must be impersonal.

이솝, 혹은 바브리우스(그의 이름이 무엇이었든 간에)는 우화에서 모든 등장인물이 비인격적이어야 한다는 것을 이해했다.

They must be like abstractions in algebra, or like pieces in chess.
