Wait a bit," said the Tortoise; "I'll run a race with you, and I'll wager that I win."

"잠깐만요," 거북이가 말했다. "당신과 경주를 하겠어요, 그리고 내가 이길 거라고 장담해요."

"Oh, well," replied the Hare, who was much amused at the idea, "let's try and see"; and it was soon agreed that the fox should set a course for them, and be the judge.

"오, 그래요," 그 생각이 몹시 재미있었던 토끼가 대답했다. "한번 해보죠"; 그리고 곧 여우가 그들을 위해 코스를 정하고 심판이 되기로 합의되었다.

When the time came both started off together, but the Hare was soon so far ahead that he thought he might as well have a rest: so down he lay and fell fast asleep.

때가 되자 둘 다 함께 출발했지만, 토끼는 곧 너무 앞서 나가서 쉬어도 되겠다고 생각했다. 그래서 그는 누워 깊이 잠들어 버렸다.

Meanwhile the Tortoise kept plodding on, and in time reached the goal.

그 사이 거북이는 계속 묵묵히 걸어 나아가 마침내 결승점에 도달했다.

At last the Hare woke up with a start, and dashed on at his fastest, but only to find that the Tortoise had already won the race.

마침내 토끼는 깜짝 놀라 잠에서 깨어 전속력으로 달려갔지만, 거북이가 이미 경주에서 이긴 것을 알게 될 뿐이었다.

Slow and steady wins the race.

느리고 꾸준한 것이 경주에서 이긴다.

THE SOLDIER AND HIS HORSE

병사와 그의 말

A Soldier gave his Horse a plentiful supply of oats in time of war, and tended him with the utmost care, for he wished him to be strong to endure the hardships of the field, and swift to bear his master, when need arose, out of the reach of danger.

한 병사가 전쟁 중에 자신의 말에게 귀리를 풍족하게 주고 정성껏 돌보았는데, 이는 말이 전장의 고난을 견딜 만큼 강하고, 필요할 때 주인을 위험에서 벗어나게 할 만큼 빠르기를 바랐기 때문이다.

But when the war was over he employed him on all sorts of drudgery, bestowing but little attention upon him, and giving him, moreover, nothing but chaff to eat.

그러나 전쟁이 끝나자 그는 말을 온갖 잡일에 부려먹으며 거의 돌보지 않았고, 게다가 먹이로는 겨만 주었다.

The time came when war broke out again, and the Soldier saddled and bridled his Horse, and, having put on his heavy coat of mail, mounted him to ride off and take the field.

다시 전쟁이 발발하는 때가 왔고, 병사는 말에 안장을 얹고 굴레를 씌운 뒤, 무거운 갑옷을 걸치고 말에 올라타 전장으로 떠나려 했다.
