갑자기 머큐리가 나타나 지팡이로 그를 마구 두들기며 말했다. "이 악당아, 이제 네 훌륭한 정의감은 어디 갔느냐?"

교활한 사자

A Lion watched a fat Bull feeding in a meadow, and his mouth watered when he thought of the royal feast he would make, but he did not dare to attack him, for he was afraid of his sharp horns.

사자 한 마리가 초원에서 풀을 뜯고 있는 살찐 황소를 지켜보며, 그것으로 멋진 만찬을 즐길 생각에 침을 흘렸지만, 날카로운 뿔이 무서워 감히 공격하지 못했다.

Hunger, however, presently compelled him to do something: and as the use of force did not promise success, he determined to resort to artifice.

그러나 배고픔이 이내 그를 무언가 하도록 몰아붙였고, 힘으로는 성공할 가망이 없었으므로 그는 꾀를 쓰기로 결심했다.

Going up to the Bull in friendly fashion, he said to him, "I cannot help saying how much I admire your magnificent figure.

사자는 친근한 태도로 황소에게 다가가 말했다. "당신의 훌륭한 체격에 얼마나 감탄하는지 말하지 않을 수가 없군요.

What a fine head! What powerful shoulders and thighs!

얼마나 멋진 머리입니까! 얼마나 강인한 어깨와 넓적다리입니까!

But, my dear friend, what in the world makes you wear those ugly horns?

하지만 친애하는 친구여, 도대체 왜 저 흉측한 뿔을 달고 다니는 겁니까?

You must find them as awkward as they are unsightly.

보기에도 흉하지만 불편하기도 하실 텐데요.

Believe me, you would do much better without them."

믿으세요, 그것들이 없으면 훨씬 나을 겁니다."

The Bull was foolish enough to be persuaded by this flattery to have his horns cut off; and, having now lost his only means of defence, fell an easy prey to the Lion.

황소는 이 아첨에 넘어가 어리석게도 뿔을 잘라버렸고, 이제 유일한 방어 수단을 잃어버린 탓에 사자의 손쉬운 먹잇감이 되고 말았다.

A Man once bought a Parrot and gave it the run of his house.

한 남자가 앵무새를 사서 집 안을 마음대로 돌아다니게 해주었다.

It revelled in its liberty, and presently flew up on to the mantelpiece and screamed away to its heart's content.

앵무새는 자유를 마음껏 즐기며 이내 벽난로 선반 위로 날아올라 실컷 소리를 질러댔다.

The noise disturbed the Cat, who was asleep on the hearthrug.

그 소음이 난롯가 깔개 위에서 잠들어 있던 고양이를 깨웠다.
